Is Ipswich worth visiting, just in a wander about gazing sort of way?

We have a dog so that limits Museum visits and indoor attractions.

The town centre is pretty dead however there are lots of interesting places around it depending on what you're after.

We're staying in Walberswick for for a few days, normally we like to walk, coast path, beaches, pub lunch kind of thing.

However, dog is elderly and mobility is limited to around 1/2-1 hrs, and stable surfaces (no beaches). We've been to the area before so revisiting the hotshots, never been to Ipswich so just wondering.

I live between Ipswich and Norwich.

The latter is a far more interesting and vibrant city. However, as a dog owner myself, I'd much prefer Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Walberswick, Southwold for a mooch.

Woodbridge is a short train ride from Ipswich and is a delight.

Southwold is the quintessential English seaside town. I love it and visit it weekly.

Aldeburgh's good. But, the beach is too pebbly for a dog walk. You can walk from there up to Thorpeness along either the coastal plain or a pretty, woodland path.

Walberswick is small, quiet and the beach is good for dog walks, depending on the tide. You can get the row boat ferry from there across to Southwold. It takes three minutes. From there it's a fifteen minute wander up the plain into town. Or, you can stroll up through Southwold harbour.

There's plenty more places too. But, i won't go on. smile

Enjoy!

As you're in Walbs and if you fancy a city visit then Norwich is where I'd go to for a day visit. No contest.

Thank you for your recommendations, we haven’t been to Norwich for years so may drop over.

You may very well know this....

As you're in Walberswick, pop into the Black Dog deli, just down from the co-op.

There you'll find sketches and writings on the walls done by local resident Charlie Mackesy who wrote the book 'The boy, the mole, the fox & the horse', which was recently turned into an Oscar winning short film.

He's often around. You may see him driving his mini cooper through the village.

Would back up Southwold is a nice coastal town. Also heard Lavenham is a nice little town too.

If I was to choose between Ipswich and Norwich it would be Norwich every time. Which is a shame as Ipswich does have the potential to be a good destination but it has suffered over the last decade or so with shops closing, etc.

As someone who was born and raised in Ipswich living there until 2004 I'd agree with all of the above. Framlingham Castle worth a look and my favourite place of all is Orford.

I'm in Suffolk, about half an hour from Ipswich, and it doesn't have anything to offer by way of a 'mooch round'. I avoid going there.
As above: many other villages and small towns with much more to offer. And Norwich is indeed 'a fine city'. From Walberswick don't forget to take the ferry to Southwold. Bit of a walk but worth it. And the fish and chips on the harbour (used to be Mrs.T's but might have changed names). Better than Aldeburgh fish and chips!

Mrs T's still open. Just down the way is Sole Bay, which has recently reopened after last year's fire. They're both excellent, IMO.

If you fancy heading the other way from Ipswich, and taking into account your dog....

Colchester's 20 minutes down the A12 and has some nice things to see, particularly the Dutch Quarter and Castle Park.

Dedham's lovely too.

Thank you all

Colchester is a little too far, we'd like to visit but save it for another day.

Recommendations appreciated, just had a pleasant walk & lunch @ Orford. Followed by a visit to Snape Maltings.

Good question. I'm not far away from that and keep meaning to visit with my train/tram crazy son.

Looks like it's open today, which is probably why you ask.

I've heard generally positive things, though it's not that big so probably a couple of hours of your day at best.

The car park isn't that big, though it's weekends and event days I'd be more concerned, today should be fine.

North Norfolk Railway is open today but is probably further than you want to drive I guess.

Lovely scenic journey from Sheringham to Holt though, nice little museum at Holt. Sheringham is also a nice place to visit.

Yes, dog friendly too, we may have been before but many years ago so not quite sure.

Is Lowestoft generally OK for a wander too?

It's been a while since I've been to Lowestoft but it was always pretty run down.

Oddly enough there is a very good transport museum in Ipswich, probably one of the very few reasons to go there.

I would recommend Felixstowe.
Old town and golf course at the north end, Landgaurd fort and the Felixstowe museum are very good plus the container port has a viewing area/carpark/good cafe.
Both ends good for beach and dog walks, and bird watching.

Did you get to Lowestoft?
As mentioned above, the town centre is a bit grim.
Perfectly ok for a stroll along the sea front, though.
If visiting the museum, Oulton Broad would have been nearby and pleasant enough for a stroll. Large park to exercise the dog too.
