Former French President Sarkozy has been found guilty and two hours later sentenced to 5 years in prison.

He has been found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a case related to taking millions of euros of illicit funds from the late Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

No doubt he'll spend years appealing and probably never see the inside of a cell.

He was previously found guilty of illegal campaign funding and sentenced to 1 year, suspended for 6 months.

If you read the BBC link you posted it says "He was sentenced to five years in jail. The ruling means he will spend time in jail even if he appeals."

He has said "I will sleep in prison with my head held high".

I couldn't help laughing at the thought of how uncomfortable that's going to be.

Remarkable.

I don’t know enough about modern French politics to comment much, really, and I’m aware he’s fallen into a trap of fighting and on occasion losing Court cases, but that really is a thing, isn’t it?

He is only the second French Head of State to go to prison. The first one was no other than Pétain...
