Hello

New job has asked me for a 5 year tax return download as further checks

They have had references. Connected to banking app. Dbs check

I cant help wonder something has gone wrong along the line.

Any ideas why they'd want that after all of the above?

I would push back on this and ask why it is needed. I’ve not heard of this before and it seems intrusive.

What’s the job?

I guess it would confirm your salary history and/or right to work in the UK but it seems an odd way of checking that.

Analyst. Contract. 12 months.

This has come a week after all the paperwork before.

Maybe someone didnt provide a reference?

If it was normal I would of thought they would ask it from the start so something cant add up

I’d have pushed back on connecting open banking, and would certainly be asking for a justification for all my tax information.

I've never had that, does sound a bit intrusive. Maybe a gap in your references might be the most likely explanation, but you could always ask.

I would ask them to explain the relevance. But I would not be giving any company I consult for that kind of information

Going to ring tomorrow and find out

Seems it's quite rare from replies above

It would be interesting to know what exactly they will do with the information.

For example take the earrings total from 5 years back and halve it or double it. Why does it make any difference to them?

This isn't as unusual as many are suggesting.

Depending on the sector and employer, it's used as an additional layer of checks. Gaps in tax paid can be for many good reasons but they may also relate to other things that the employer needs to know about. Being able to see this enables them to make enquiries if the tax record differs to your CV or what you have stated in interviews. This tends to happen a lot in financial services, security and similar sectors where the probity of staff is of paramount importance. Less so in others.

Normally, you wouldn't send your P60s direct to the company but to a third party organisations who would only notify the company if they spotted anything needing investigation.

No harm in asking why they need it and doesn't necessarily mean a red flag needs to be raised.

I'm finding companies, organisations and the like are so scared of falling foul of 'regulations' that they are asking for more and more intrusive personal information, just so they can tick boxes and cover their backsides.

I'm currently going through a situation where I'm having to jump through hoops to provide intrusive, personal documentation to prove my identity, 'wealth', source of funds etc. I've been working with the organisation for 10 years. They say it is for security, yes having all my details on your servers and in your filling cabinets is really secure.

Scary stuff and it will only get worse as companies and government harvest more and more of your personal information, linking it all together.
