So need to get a new daily car towards the end of the year, in doing so found that I am really wanting an XKR, however once the initial drooling phase is over started to think about all the boring stuff, practicality’s etc….

I have 2 small kids 6 and 2 (plus wife) that I need to ferry around at the weekends, and keep reading conflicting reports some say ok some say no a chance I guess I won’t know till I have the car and try out some car seats, which makes my head kick into gear saying might not be the best choice.

Looked at XFR (same engine) but the styling just don’t get me.

Sensible option is a BMW 640d GC

But I’ve also cast my eye over a Audi RS5

My budget is 15-20k

Daily drive is 50 mile round trip on B roads

mpg not an issue (within 20-30mpg)

Want something a bit special and fun/enjoyment out of every day

Any suggestions

I had a XKR when my two were six and three and in all honesty, it did not work carrying the Children in the rear of the vehicle from both the legroom perspective and the ‘cocoon’ aspect of the rear of the vehicle.

Ohhh......thanks for this. Not what i wanted to hear haha, but great to get an actual definitive answer from someone who's been there and done that.

I think I sadly need to forget the XKR..........

Maybe a M6 GC could be the answer, but i am lead to think these can have major expensive issues. Plus these creep outside the budget

Sorry to say that will not be a child friendly space in the back of the XKR but there are some great options that won't break the bank maintenance/reliability wise.

+1 to this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202508295...

Or you could get an XFR is a cracking option:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509206...

If you don't mind high miles, then the XFR-S could be an option:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202507024...

If the M6 GC floats your boat then I'd suggest the CLS63 in bulletproof 5.5 form:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509076...

Panamera 4.8T:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509176...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202508145...

S6, these are a bit of a sleeper with great performance (the XFR is a better steer) not the most involving but a cracking daily none the less:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509126...

S8:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202508255...

M2:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202507315...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509216...

RS3 but in all honesty I'd take the S5 everytime:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509086...

I'm bias but the C63 in 125 edition spec is a good fit:

It worked for me, I had my XKR convertible from when my youngest was 18 months and my eldest was 8 upto 2019 when they were 7 and 14. During that time it was our only car for trips to wales including the dog. I bought a V90 to run alongside it as my eldest is now 5ft 10 but am still using it for 3/4 of my trips with my wife and now youngest who is 13. If you want to make it work you can

What is even more promising is that I just took it for a 2000 mile road trip across France, Germany, Austria and italy using a company that specialises in such holidays. It was absolutely awesome and held its own against a lot of newer and more expensive machinery

I looked at an XKR and if you are reasonably short then rear *can* work but over 6 foot there will be negligible rear leg room behind the driver.
Also bare in mind that even if the kids can squeeze in it is pretty dark and claustrophobic back there.

Having run one they are great cars, but definitely a fast family saloon rather than a sporty coupe.

I had an older XK8 (X100) when my boys were 6 and 3, and we managed just fine with the car seats in the back.

They are 14 and 11 now, both tall for their age, and there is no chance they'd fit in.

OP - get that XKR while your kids are still small!

My son has one and his seat is fully up against the back seat, so not 1mm of leg room!

I'm a bawhair under 6ft tall and you'd have to cut the legs of a small child off to fit behind me.

Would they consider becoming a wheelchair user? Ironically, there would be plenty of room in the boot to cart 2 about. biggrin

I wouldn't entertain a xk with kids, the rear leg room is poor even for little legs.

Have you considered a XJ Supersport? They're surprisingly sharp in terms of driving dynamics for a barge (i'd even say the xj has better steering than a xj), just as fast, just as noisy with a sumptuously good interior.

Surely if you want a 2 door coupe with rear space, then you want a Maserati GT.
Ghibli really nice and even more practical but the GT is in the XKR vein

In all honesty the Maserati GT is the one, but running costs/ maintenance as a daily driver for one of these scare me,

Maser is fine. Obviously they need services etc but they aren’t particularly troublesome Regular use is beneficial.
Some spares are pricey but I think that’s not uncommon these days
Look out for rust underneath , having mine under sealed today but has been good so far.
Even does 29mpg on a run!

I think the GranTurismo is a good shout, I looked at one when I got my XKR 13 years ago but they were a bit too heavy and lacking in torque however sound amazing. The boot on the cabriolet is a joke.
Just to clarify. I am 5’10 and my wife is 5’3 so lots of flexibility with the back seats. If you are both 6’2 then it won’t work with an XKR
