We've bought a horsebox, so we're not towing anymore, would like something that's reliable, cheap to run, can get 2 large dogs in.

Was looking around, saw this

https://www.marshall.co.uk/jaguar/used-cars/202690...

10 year warranty, 40ish miles of plug in range and no issues if not charging as it works like a self charging hybrid also.

I get they were a tough sell at £50k nearly new, but 2 years old ish for £22-23.5k, what else offers the same package/price?

10 year warranty on a Suzuki?

I didn't know they were doing that.

I've driven the Rav 4's and they're a nice thing.

I'd sooner have one of those rather than a full electric at the moment.

Yeah my wife has one - other than the headlights and badging it's essentially a highly specced Rav4 PHEV.

It's great -

Properly, almost unnecessarily fast for what it is with over 300 bhp and 60 in 5.5s in hybrid mode. No one suspects the performance at all.

Will easily do 45+ real world miles with 232 bhp in pure EV mode.

Will then do 500 miles as a hybrid doing 50+ mpg. Maybe a touch less if you cruise at 75+ as it's not particularly aerodynamic.

Feels pretty solid with very comfortable no nonsense interior - proper physical controls for almost everything including all climate control functions, heated seats etc.

It has Toyota's hybrid system with all of the usual smoothness, efficiency and durability advantages. Incredibly well engineered and really very simple. Worth watching some YouTube videos to see how clever it is. Makes something like a VW with a jerky DSG feel incredibly old fashioned.

It's surprisingly decent off road for what it is, with decent tyres it'll go anywhere the ground clearance allows in the snow.

Downsides or quirks:

It's not sporty at all despite the performance, it's perfectly competent but definitely more comfort focused.

The software on the ICE is a bit old fashioned and clunky looking - it works perfectly well though so not really a major issue.

There's no built in satnav - pressing the NAV button simply brings up Google maps if you have your phone hooked up.

The 19 inch wheels that come with the Across do have an impact on the ride. It's certainly not bad and is still orders of magnitude better than our Tesla Model Y but a friend's Rav4 on 17s does feel noticeably better over really rough roads.

The electric powered tailgate is sloooooow. Stupid idea at the best of times but it does try your
patience!

Only the driver's seat is fully electrically adjustable and the passenger seat isn't adjustable for height. Bizarre given how well specced the rest of the car is. Probably only an issue if you regularly have a very tall passenger.

Any other questions, just ask!

My wife's (Rav 4 version) is about to go back after 3 years and 50k miles. Completely reliable, 54mpg average, a very usable 45 mile EV range, hot hatch matching performance when you want it. Overall a very solid, comfortable and reliable car. My only negatives are the really outdated infotainment system (not that it's ever really bothered me as you just use the phone apps), and it's not a very engaging drive. As a family car I'd have another any day.

Can you charge these from a 3 pin socket or do you need a proper charger?

You can use a 3 pin but with an 18kWh battery you won't get a full charge within the time window of cheap EV tariffs

Watching with interest as the leading two contenders for replacing our 2014 Skoda Yeti as the main family car are currently the 2022 Model Y and the 2021-ish RAV4 PHEV (or this Suzuki version) both of which cost the same in the £20-25k range somewhere, so far as I can see

These seem to be circa £5-7k less for the Suzuki badge.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I’m going to go for one, I like the physical buttons and slightly no faff nature of it. Really can’t see a negative?

£1-2K more with a better choice of colours and lower miles (you only have a black car once!)

Also keeping an eye on these to potentially replace our older CX5. I have noticed the insurance is quite expensive on these (twice as much as a CX5 for me for example). Also has the high tax for the first 5 years but at least at 3-4 years old there's not too much longer to go on that.

I won't comment on the Tesla specific stuff (other than to say it does my head in - those door handles!) or the reliability (our Model Y has been a disaster) but, owning both, I think as an overall car I prefer the Across.

It's better built, rides much better and is more relaxing to drive. The Tesla isn't really an SUV either, it has significantly less ground clearance if you do need some ability there. Worth thinking about the potentially 6 extra years of warranty especially if your Model Y is as unreliable and expensive to repair as ours.

My FIL has one and thought the same so fitted 18" Lexus NX wheels with bigger (and cheaper) tyres - vastly improved the ride

Only significant issue he had was the charging loom suffered corrosion and stopped the EV system from working - a new loom took/harness took about 3 months to come in however Suzuki replaced it under warranty.

Made me chuckle!
Yep, I am in that "one former black car owner and never again" category hehe

I've owned the normal hybrid RAV4 and for the last 18 months the PHEV.

Just to echo what's already been said it's fast for what it is and I never get tired of its acceleration! Loads of room, very reliable and the years warranty with Toyota after each service is reassuring. I get 54 miles on electric alone in summer and mid 40's winter. Using the ICE alone on a 200 mile trip I got 50mpg with a heavy right foot!

Yes, the infotainment system is dated but its acceptable using wired Apple Car Play.

I've spent a few months looking to change my car as I don't keep my cars for longer than 2 years! Despite a list of a dozen cars I can't part with the RAV4 yet for the additional outlay to change given how good it is.

The upgraded infotainment is definitely well worth having, the older version is like something from 2010.
