Patio step help!
Discussion
So i have been (slowly!) building a patio in my rear garden, this is the main area - and i want to replace the slabs down the side up to the gate with the same porcelain slabs, including the ones on the steps.

However the height of the existing slab on top of the step is the same height as my patio height. But my new slabs are 20mm, the original is 50mm.
How can i get my new slab to the same height, without using 40mm of mortar? as i think this would look wrong.
Also they built the steps on top of each slab. The bottom one i think i could cut flush, however to do this on the middle step, i would then need to raise the new slab 30mm, to hide the cut slab?

Anyone any ideas on how to get past these issues?
Or is my only option to smash up the steps, and start again
which would be a pain, as there is also another set the other side of the gate, which has the same issue.

To avoid having a really thick, visible bed joint, you could use a thin strip of your porcelain on the front edge of the step, make it flush with the brick risers, then have the ‘tread’ overhang a little, should look ok. If the new bottom and middle treads are to be at the same height as the existing, seeing the broken edge won’t be a problem will it, it will be covered?
