Advice on 7ft 'Emperor' mattress and bed.

Anyone here got one? Where did you buy it?

Appears the majority of mainstream outlets stop at a 6ft Super king, yet are multiple online firms offeriwider beds, but then you have the issue of buying without trying it out. I understand many independents will make custom sizes.

Not looking for anything wild in terms of spec. Just a nicer comfortable mid-high spec sprung mattress.

Planning to stick with 6ft6 length, I'm 6ft2

They seem like a great idea until you need to change the sheets and a really bad idea when you change the quilt cover.

Thanks for that. We're looking for a new King size mattress and they can make 2 x 2'6" zipped which would be ideal given our different weights; we must pay them a visit.

Obviously you need sheets to match, flat or fitted, but is it really that much harder to change a 7ft bed than a 6ft Super King or 5ft King as we currently have? I am not looking forward to getting it up the stairs, but i've taken on more extreme challenges in my life! Do you have experience of owning a 7ft bed?

The demand comes about because we have a young family and even with the eldest child now 3.5yo with their own room and double bed, they come into our room in the morning, particularly over the weekend, and increasingly the current 5ft width is not enough. Looking at the situation and some future proofing, an extra 2ft feels like it will be much more comfortable than an extra 1ft at which point if you are doing it, do it once and do it right.

The plan would be to continue using our current super king feather duvets, potentially in conjunction with a second single duvet or blankets when we are all in the bed.

Thanks for that, I actually came across them looking at divan bases for frame beds, although In the end we opted for another solution there.

Have you used them for a mattress previously?

I was going to say about duvets/sheets etc. Friend of mine wanted the same in his newly built bedroom (which is huge) and the costs of having to have some stuff custom made to match decor etc and then having to have 3 of everything he decided against it but if you're compromising on just keeping King stuff then its probably ok.

Didn't even know they made 7ft beds, maybe stating the obvious but have you checked you'll be able to get sheets etc for it

Its a valid point, but yes sheets etc are perfectly available for a 6ft6x7ft bed or 7x7, 7x8, 8x8 etc

Where are you getting those numbers?

The "Jersey Cotton Fitted Sheet" even on that site is currently £36 for a 7ftx7ft 'large emperor' size.

And a mattress protector for a 6ft6x7ft bed is £60 from here, or £76 for a hollow fibre pad.

Yes its a bit more, but a boggo Silentnight king/superking mattress protector from Argos is £30 which is half way there, you only need two.

Have you need to price of mattresses recently? Or the price of weekly supermarket shop for family of four.

Standard single is 3ft, two together is 6ft, which is a bog standard Superking width. Plenty of ziplink superkings.

Singles and Doubles are also 6ft3 long, where King and Superking are 6ft6, which is an important deference when you are 6ft2 tall as you get 4x more margin!

We have a Superking (6') bed, and I would advise against getting anything wider, unless you actually want to be sleeping nowhere near your partner, or you are both extremely wide yourselves.

Your kids will stop coming into your bed in a few years (enjoy it while it lasts, it's great) so there's no point in getting a bigger bed to accomodate that.

Even with a 6' bed, in the colder months there's definitely a cold spot in the middle of the bed, and you have to make an effort to cross it !

Years and years ago I worked for Sleepeezee so like a pocket sprung mattress now.

I ordered a Choices 2000 from Bed Factory Direct .co.uk and then some months later another bed for my son and I have to say both of us have been very happy with them. Firm yet comfortable.

It doesn't matter how wide your bed is, when the kids (with the agreement of your partner) decide that weekend mornings are more fun hanging out in your room it's a sign that you just need to get up and turn the coffee machine on. Life isn't about you getting a lie in any more.

Points taken, including the fact it will all change year by year, and neither of us are in any way very wide, however while I will feed it back into the conversation with my wife I think we are fairly set on the plan. Sticking with a superking (or sometimes even king) duvet may well also help keep us from having an excessive empty space between us.

The room is a very good size, so the additional size in the room will not be an issue. We could currently easily fit a sofa in there, alongside the bed, drawers, and dressing table, and the dog bed.

We swapped from a 5ft to a 6ft a few years ago. Putting the duvet cover on is materially more annoying than the 5ft so I'd avoid a 7ft myself for that reason alone.

Even having a 6ft has spoiled us; it's much harder to book a hotel room or holiday cottage these days because so many only have 5ft beds. And if you're going away you don't want to wish you were in your bed at home
