There could be a massive fine from the ICO or equivalent for a company that hasn’t put the minimum expected standards and safeguards in place.
Of course if a breach is caused by a new flaw that no-one saw coming and all industry norm/expected policies and processes were in place, the breached company is likely to be viewed more favourably.

I just got an email from Renault saying someone has hacked "a third party" they use and has stolen my Alpine related data including my dob, name and address, phone number, email, vin, and reg.
The email was like well, "we're sorry but there you go". WTF!
Anybody else had similar?
I've not owned a Renault for a couple of years now and got the mail. Like you I was a bit irritated at the "oh well" attitude to itThe email was like well, "we're sorry but there you go". WTF!

Yeah got the same at 1am this morning also saying car VIN and registration number ?!? Cars not even being built yet so how does that work?
The email I received says "the attackers have access to some or all of the following information"..... so if you haven't been allocated a VIN then naturally they wouldn't have that.Dawnski said:
Is this dealer related do you think? I'm in East Anglia and used a localish dealer.
Given that it seems to cover a range of Renault brands and also those who have only made enquiries or have orders in as well as current and former customers like me my suspicion goes to the dealer CRM system.Out of interest, does anyone know the ownership of the dealers they have been using? In my case, I bought from a Renault Retail owned dealer, but all servicing was done at an independantly owned dealer so that doesn't really narrow things down
I got the same email and I've never owned an Alpine. I did have a Renault that I had dealer serviced for a while, which I guess is my link into this. Email states it was a third party provider that had the data leak, so doubt it's specific to any geographical area or specific dealership.
Personally I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist about it. I no longer own the car or even live at the same address.

I just got a text message from RENAULT about a cyber-attack, but it looks very scammy with a generic link I'm supposed to click on. I can't see anything official on Renault's website. There's a BBC article about the hack, but has anyone found any information from Renault directly?
A bit worrying if criminals now possess info on the cars we own along with our home addresses and other details.

That doesn’t sound like the email I and others have received. Phishing scam. A bit worrying if criminals now possess info on the cars we own along with our home addresses and other details.
