My wife and I (then gf) went to Iceland around 15 years ago in the Winter and loved it. We're planning to take our kids (6 and 8) in December. We're staying in Reyjkavik. Any tips of great things to see with them and for that time of year?

thanks

Not December, but I took my eldest two (13 & 10 then) last year at the end of October through November. It was cold and dark mostly, but dry and very little wind until the last day. If the whole week had been like that it would have been a pretty miserable experience. We were initially going to rent a camper van, but thought better of it (winter camping in Iceland is very limited, and there are very few places open) and got a car and booked hotels for each night. We did a glacier trip, the Husafel stone, the Blue Lagoon, got lucky one night with the aurora, diamond beach, and a whale watching trip. All in they loved it. If I did it again I would probably not bother with diamond beach. It was lovely to visit, especially at sunset, but with our relatively short trip, it added about 10 hours of driving, which probably we could have done without. As part of a longer trip or a circumnavigation then it is worth a stop. Our total drive was 1100km over five days.

The FlyOver Iceland is really good, as it the live Lava Show, I did these last December so would hight recommend them. We also did the Golden Circle your which is a must.

I’d just look up top 10 things to see in Iceland. Been twice, first time around Golden Circle (organised large jeep tour) and second time south coast (long drive and overnight stay).
Weather could be horrendous one day and fine the next. Trips may get cancelled due to weather.
For kids I’d recommend the Fly over Iceland ride and Perlan.

You are going to need to spend a bit on clothes and shoes as it can be freezing and very wet.

We went for a few days at Christmas a few years ago - an absolutely amazing trip

Managed to get a private Golden Circle trip arranged for Christmas Day, and some other excursions including the blue lagoon on other days.

Be aware that if you are there at Christmas, the place closes at lunchtime on Christmas Eve and doesn't start again until Boxing Day. If you can plan around that it's fine.

We tried a northern lights trip, but the weather was against us.

The other thing is the daylight times - plan for that again.

Reykjavik Cathedral - don't let the lack of snow give an impression that it wasn't cold......

Up on the Glacier
Yes - I'm a Land Rover owner as well, so it had to appear in lots of pics!!
