Morning all,

Quick question about selling through Motorway that isn't clear from their FAQs.

Does their process expect payment to clear to the seller before the car is released?

This is what the website says:

Motorway said:
Payment
We offer a payment service free for all dealers which is fast for both you and your purchasing dealer, and secure – reducing the need to share bank details. Dealers can also choose to pay you directly. Either way the payment will be initiated on the same day.
"Initiated" doesn't mean cleared, and I'm loathe to release a car without cleared funds...

I’ve only sold one car via Motorway, but the person who picked it up called the dealer and approved the payment, which was made straightaway before they left with the car.

There was another (silly) thread about this with a lot of incorrect information, which culminated in some posters advocating taking a power stance between the car and the front gate, until payment clears.

Motorway allows some bigger dealers to pay after collection. If things go wrong, they will "negotiate on your behalf". It is unlikely that things will go wrong. It's probably unlikely to scupper the sale if you say "no pay, no take away". But it might.

I haven't used them for this reason. That, and too many tales of dealers turning up and trying to renegotiate.

My one experience was the guy did a bank transfer on the drive and confirmed it was in my account before he drove away. Very easy!

No way should anyone be forced to let their car go without payment first.

The so called "big dealers" who insist they take the car, and pay later, do this as they're sending unskilled (as buyers) drivers to collect the cars.

Motorway aren't going to step in and pay for your car if the dealer doesn't.

Those same big dealers that regularly let buyers take cars from them without paying until later.

I can only assume you're talking about finance?

The finance company pay the dealer, and then the finance company own the car until it's paid in full.

He was taking the piss.

Dealers won't let you drive away without payment but (some) expect to be able to do so themselves.

Would Sir like to pay for his whoosh parrot in cash or by card?

Not Motorway but I sold through CarWow so very similar business model. The dealer inspected the vehicle at my home, tried to chip the price which I refused then paid before driving away.

As others have said never ever let them take the car before payment.
