Wife and daughter are heading to Malta at the end of the month and taking one of my daughters friends (15yr old).

We've been alerted to the fact that we need a Child Travel Consent Letter (CTCL), giving permission from friends parents that she can travel with my wife.

There is a downloadable letter from the law depot website that we can complete. The friend will also travel with her birth certificate.

Has anybody else travelled in such a circumstance and carried a CTCL? Did you get the signing witnessed by a Notary Public or just go with a completed CTCL?

Have people faced issues at boarder control when travelling with a young person not related to themselves?

My daughter took a school trip of 6th formers to Russia. She ended up with a challenge from the Russian border control on exit as one of the children had a Russian national as a parent, so it does happen, albeit in extremis.

Again in extremis, you may also want to consider being the "guardian" in a healthcare scenario. It's very likely one of those things where if you have it you won't ever need it, but if you don't you'll wish you did.

All that said, I'd spend more time talking about who is paying for her mobile phone bill when she is with you...

I prepare one of these for my wife on a regular basis (she didn't take my name when we married) and she travels substantially with one or both of our children throughout the year.

She takes a photocopy of the birth certificate, rather than the actual BC itself and on the rare occasion she's been asked for a consent form, they were happy with this.

Strangely enough she's hardly ever been asked for the document, but when she has, it was on arrival back in the UK - go figure.

I had a friend or even nursery/school worker simply witness and sign the document, and I used the law depot document as a guide/template.

Thanks for all the replies. We're going to complete the Law Depot form and get the friends mother to sign it at her place of work and have it witnessed by a professional person - she works in healthcare.
