Hey everyone,
I currently own a tuned BMW 116d (F20, 140hp) and I’m looking for something new.
I want to switch to a sportier and more engaging car, with a budget of around €10,000 (a bit more or less is fine).
I’m looking for something with good power but not extreme fuel consumption.

Does anyone have suggestions or ideas for models that fit these criteria?

I don’t have a very broad knowledge of the car market, so I’m not sure which direction to go, which models are good, or which ones to avoid.
(I am staying in Belgium)

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Well, you're at a very low starting point, can't get much less sporting than a 116d!

Obviously there's near limitless options below 10k, so starting with the familiar... how about a bmw 220d? Or a smaller engined bmw z4?

You'll have to be more specific to get more suggestions...
Age and mileage limits?
2 seats or 4?
Fwd or rwd preferred?
What mpg is acceptable?
How much power do you want?

My 2008 bmw 330d makes 300bhp, returns 38mpg and is well below 10k. Not particularly sporty though.

Equally my boxster was under £10k (in the UK at least) and is arguably about as sporty as you can get for £10k - its a bit old and not brilliant on fuel though.

Options options.

The answer is almost always an MX-5.

That's true.

Unless you provide a reason why it's not suitable, just buy the best mx5 you can afford.

Sticking with BMWs, their turbo sixes are great - power, torque, sound and economy - so perhaps an M135i or 335i (touring?).

Other practical affordable cars are probably hot hatches, of which the Golf GTi (mk5 or mk7), Fiesta ST (mk7 or 8) and Renaultsport Meganes are highly rated. Again, turbo petrol engines, sporting and fairly economical.

If you don't need practicality, the suggested MX-5 and Boxster are the obvious candidates. A Vauxhall (Opel) VX220 is probably the sportiest thing for c.10k and fairly economical, but utterly impractical. The last Toyota MR-2 is similarly small, light, mid-engined and impractical, but also quite old now.

A Mazda RX-8 could be an outside candidate, but you need to find a good rotary specialist, which I think are rare on the Continent.

But as others have said, your constraints will determine what sort of car suits.
