So I have a breakfast meeting next week in St James. 9am start.

Normally I just drive into Kensington or Barons Court along the M4 and tube from there, but I have very little appetite for making that journey at 7am!

So, plan is to drive down the M40, find a Premier Inn or similar, leave the car outside the M25 and train/tube into town.

Any suggestions for a hotel and corresponding train please?

Depends how far “ down “ the M40 you want to be ?
For instance at Bicester there is both a Premier Inn and a Holiday Inn with Chiltern Train station service to Marylebone from either Bicester Village or Bicester North.
Nearer London there is a IHG at High Wycombe plus probably a few other hotels - again Service to Marylebone.
Next junction up is Beaconsfield - again options there plus train etc.

The tube doesn't run out past the M25 along the M40, so that's out. As said Network Rail from Beaconsfield, High Wycombe or the like. 1st tube station would be Uxbridge, just inside the M25, but there's a Premier Inn right next to Uxbridge tube station. Piccadilly Line to Barons Court, District line just across the same platform to St James's Pk.

Premier inn in Banbury town centre, 10 minute walk to the station, into Marylebone in less than an hour.

Premier Inn at Loudwater- close to High Wycombe station which is 20 mins to London Marylebone on a fast train or PI/Travelodge in Wycombe which is walking distance to station but will be more expensive than Loudwater

Amersham, Chesham, Chalfont and Chorleywood really would like a word.

Go on then. "Along the M40" is all ears.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Will I get a parking space at 7am at High Wycombe/Beaconsfield stations?

There's a cheap hotel at Beaconsfield services, from there you can walk and take the scenic route past the football club over the M40 footbridge into the old town and follow station rd for the station.

Its under half an hour to Marylebone on the train or take the 105 bus to Amersham for the tube.

Yes-multi storey car parks at both stations plus big Council carpark adjoining Wycombe station-there will be more trains running from HW even though Beaconsfield is next stop

There's also alternative parking at Beaconsfield behind the new soon to be opened 'Spoons on Station Rd at £8.20 for up to 12 hours parking which is a 2 minute walk to the station.
