Google chrome has stopped opening on my Windows 10 laptop. Was working yesterday and has done for years.

It briefly gives a spinning wheel and then nothing. Doesn't show in Task Manager (other than again briefly while the wheel is spinning) while it thinks about starting up.

I've checked windows firewall. Uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome but still the same.

Other browsers (firefox, edge, opera) all work normally.

If I log in as a different user on my laptop Chrome works properly.

I've tried googling all the combinations I can think of but can't find this particular issue mentioned.

Can anyone advise please?

Try safe mode first, just run :

chrome --safe-mode.

If that starts try removing extensions then running as normal.

If that doesnt work, backup the user profile directory and then delete it to see if that helps.

Obviously ignore all the steps that say "open chrome" laugh

It will delete all saved passwords, extensions, history, etc

Almost certainly a corruption of your user profile from what you've described.

go to c:\users\*your username*\appdata\local\google\

In there will be a folder called Chrome. Delete it (Yes you'll lose anything that isn't synced to your google login) but after that chrome should open up again.

Appdata is a hidden folder, so you'll either need to type it direct into your address bar or make hidden files visible.

Now sorted. It was the user profile.

Thank you both for your help.

Edited to add:

Seems a lot quicker now. There must have been some issue building up till it failed.
