Looking at potentially replacing my Merc C43 tourer with an M5.
Cover c360 miles per week in 3 days, roads are a mix of a and b.
Would lease with maintenance. Anything that I should consider?
Thanks
Neighbor has one. They are huge cars, so not the easiest to run on narrow roads. Coming from a C-Class, I would think that will take some adjustment. Here in Germany, the G31 is my size limit, and I can imagine parts of the UK are worse in terms of space.Cover c360 miles per week in 3 days, roads are a mix of a and b.

I really fancy one but just found it too big
The M3 is size the m5's used to be, at least in my head.
It's also bloody heavy so I felt I'd go through tyres and brakes in no time or be driving it constantly wary of doing so. Not an issue if money not a problem, but I think you need to get an extended test drive and check you are happy with the size of it. Especially if you like a bit of b road fun

It's no faster than an F90 M5 but that weight is a joke and the size of it way to big.
I don't think it can be said that it's no faster than the F90. It depends what scenario you find yourself in. Day to day living it's a faster car.The weight issue seems to have lost the attention it once had due to how the car drives and copes with this in the day to day living. The hybrid is forced on this model to retain the V8 and in turn that has the impact of a heavy battery. Smaller engine less hybrid tech or large engine more hybrid tech. AMG went down the first road and paid the price.
All cars are increasing in size as models evolve, it's not unique to this model.
I think it can be quiet lazy to say hasn't got faster, it's too heavy and it's increased in size. Has it got better looking (subjective anyway) ? Has the quality of the product dropped (especially the interior) ? Has the equipment list shrunk ? Are the driving settings too complicated ? etc. These kind of questions are more applicable in my mind to criticise the current M5.

Electric only range is c40-45 miles depending on driving, which you'll burn through in one leg of your commute based on your mileage. If you can charge for the return leg you'll certainly get decent mileage out of a tank of fuel for a V8.Cover c360 miles per week in 3 days, roads are a mix of a and b.

Running in service is £500-600 and happens between 850 and 1200miles.
Lease deals (personal, can't comment on business) weren't that attractive and PCP worked out the most cost effective. Although APR is now up at 5.9% unless you have BMW loyalty then it's 4.9%.
Sometimes the ride can give you the odd jolt and it continues to bounce on the back of it but in general I think it rides well. If you want a softer M style car go down the m performance route with a different model.
Overtaking is very punchy, especially if you pull the boost paddle which is like stretching an elastic band to build up all energy then letting it go.
Options wise it comes with the usual stuff. My personal preference was the comfort pack for the rear blinds to protect the wee ones further plus it adds in the ventilated front seats and heated rears.
Hardest choice for me was exterior and interior colour. Blue, green and black were done to death so went Alpine White with Red interior.
Had one out for an extended test drive last week as I am considering the Touring.
Car is fast, yes it's wide which is an issue on country roads etc. Weight you can feel but it does hide it well. Looks are an acquired taste. Ride was good for a M car - mpg is good whilst you have battery power but drops once the battery is exhausted.
Biggest disappointment was the interior which is had clearly been cost engineered to what I feel is an unacceptable level. It shows in all sorts of things like cheap plasticy steering wheel, door trim that flexes and looks cheap, centre console that flexes when you push the buttons. Changing driving modes is a pain as you have to go into the menu if you want to revert back from say M1 or M2.

They did well to keep the M5 alive in this new age of nonsense we live in, but the car is still a pig. I really do not understand why they made it so big. I have a G31 and could not imagine going bigger on European roads. The weight issue seems to have lost the attention it once had due to how the car drives and copes with this in the day to day living. I think it is a fast comfortable cruiser - GT if you like - never really expected anything else and certainly doesn't feel appreciably bigger than my previous F90 (and I have the G99 variant).
If I want to drive fast on B roads I would use something more appropriate - even the E92s I used to have felt big there, the M3 touring doesn't feel much smaller to me. Loti - much more suited

I remember your F90 M5s fondly, JM
I'm currently reading the F90 M5 thread in here from start-to-finish (about half way through so far), and the level of praise, hype, excitement and all-round positivity the F90 was getting 2018-2020 was night-and-day different to what this new hybrid M5 is getting. Take a look back at the F90 thread for anyone that doesn't believe me...
The F90 M5 is peak M5 all things considered.
This new M5 just isn't no way near as well received. I've also heard the interior is a step back. Interestingly a colleague test drove a G99 here and the demo model didn't even have soft-close doors! The G90/G99 is a by-product of BMW catering to the emissions regs (okay hands are tied on this), the Chinese market with its design language and the BMW Accountants cutting back anywhere they can!
I will buy a pre-LCI F90 in a couple of years after more fun with my F13 M6, and I will keep that for a very long time. Then replace with a late model LCI F90 and repeat lol.

Thanks mate, I miss them but we must move on, I am 76 now so M cars a bit of a waste for me.

So I picked up a G90 M5 a couple of weeks ago, Ex demo car so came with the ultimate pack. Mperformance kit (yes it s a bit Halfords) and in frozen grey, having owned every iteration of the previous car bar CS and 2 x F10 my conclusions are pretty much what s been mirrored above.
Negatives for me are;
The interior build quality is not as good as its predecessor, I actually can t get my head around how cheap the indicator stalk feels.
They have also done away with massage seats, soft close doors (although they are so light I can t see this being an issue) and the motion control for the infotainment system and rear entertainment.
You do get a rear blinds included within the ultimate pack which I can t see myself ever using so utterly pointless.
Sound does not seem as good but I m guessing that s down to the inclusion of PPF filters (I m sure my previousF80Lci would have had these) or new EU regs.
Mine came on Hankook tyres, now I ve always believed for these to be a budget tyre, well I m sure they were at some point and it took a friend to point out to me that they are indeed a premium tyre now - I ve always preferred Michelins but maybe some others can bring me up-to date on Tyre hierarchy.
It s not an F90.
Positives are;
It is unbelievably good on fuel, I managed 370 combined miles on one tank doing my usual travel and charging at night - I m currently in Paris and managed the best part of 280 miles and that was sitting at a ton most of the way - this is on what I believe to be a 60 litre tank.
You don t really feel how heavy it is and although it s been a few years since my previous F90, it doesn t seem slower but having said that I haven t had chance to really chuck it around.
The looks are growing on me and it does have some road presence IMO.
Tech is good, not miles ahead of the F90 but little things like automatically turning on the heated steering wheel and seats when the temp is turned upto a certain point is nice, also the inclusion of an interior camera could be handy never.

I have just come back from Austria in my other half's X3M and was below 20MPG (average speed was high as traffic was very clear).
Will be going to Italy in December in the G99 so I wonder what it will be like compared to the F90 I just got rid off - I fully expect it to be better than the X3M and the F90 but by how how much and how to use the hybrid part to achieve that..... (I like the idea of cake and eat it!)
I have had my G99 M5 touring about 6 weeks now and its just about ready for its 1200 mile running in service so my opinions are only based on that small amount of time of ownership.
I drive the car every day, as a comute to work, (25 mile round trip) as well as all my other needs.
For context I have just come out of a Mercedes AMG E63S estate, that i owned for about 3 years that i also used as my daily driver.
First Impressions, as a daily driver / daily commuting car where I am in pretty heavy traffic etc. Its great, I use it on fully electric mode for my commute, as during that situation its all i need, a 25 mile commute is perfect for this and I can get to and from work then recharge it overnight ready for the next day. Commute costs dropped to approx £1 a day in electricity from probably £10+ a day in fuel.
Now obviously no one buys an M5 for these reasons!! However for me as I spend a lot of my time driving like this its an important consideration thats maybe not the same for everyone.
Other points, its very comfortable, nice seats, its a nice place to sit it has the tech i need / want. Its a nice place to spend time in. Its certainly an easier to car to live with day to day than the E63, which was a little more hard core, (harder suspension, harder seats, noisier etc.)
It is a big car, even bigger than the mercedes e class which wasnt exactly small, but this is not something thats new, each version of a car seems bigger than the last.
I drove it on a 250 mile journey the other day, and it was comfortable and capable, obviously fuel economy takes a hit once the electric runs out, but other than that all good.
Now I guess the bits that you buy an M5 for. Its quick, there is less lag than the E63 on that initial pickup, and throttle response is fast. I guess that is the immediate torque of the electric engine. The engine sounds good when pushed, not as agressive as the E63 it doesnt pop and bang the same. But overall it sounds as a sporty car should. It also hides it weight well it certainly doesnt feel bloated, and felt good when the roads got twisty. Yes it might be different if you put it on a track, the weight would probably be more obvious there, but my car will never see a track so no issue for me. Overall I am very happy with the performance so far, both on a straight line and on the twisty roads.
the negatives....
The inside of the car feels cheaper than a car of this price point should IMO, some of the plastic bits could / should be better. When you close the door, it feels a bit cheap, you dont get the reasuring clunk, it all feels a bit plastic and lightweight. I wouldnt mind that in a lightweight sports car, but in a 2.5 tonne car its clearly a cost measure and not a weight saving measure!
The boot is a lot smaller than the E63's boot, which given the exterior of the car is so big I guess the electric bits / Batteries have eaten up a lot of the space. This hasnt been a problem so far, time will tell if it becomes one.
I cant comment how it is compared to previous versions of the M5 as I havent owned them, but I agree with the comments about it being more a grand tourer. If i compare it to the E63's its defo less hardcore, and more civilised.
For me and what i wanted from a car it has so far delivered, the only thing i would change is the slightly cheap feel of the cabin materials. But overall I am happy. Time will tell if in 3 years I feel the same way.
