I’m sure this has been asked a million times, but in the interest of my sanity and not searching to find it, I’m asking again.

We have a car on lease via Leasys.

It was due up this month and at time of enquiring the longest informal extension they would give us was until January 2026, so I did.

They have then last week offered us a formal lease extension of up to 36 months. However.

The monthly cost rises from 292 per month to 999 a month (that is not a typo- nine hundred and ninety nine pounds!!!!), which I have of course declined.

My query is, what happens if I simply ignore their request to book the car in for collection?

On a sample size of one, friend of mine did this with another leasing company and simply carried on making his monthly payments, keeping to the annual milage allowance and servicing schedule.

After a few years he handed it back- no drama whatsoever.

Realistically, are there any ramifications or pitfalls to doing this?

Any experience and advice in this area gratefully received. TIA.

It’s not impossible it happened, but my instinct is that your mate is not giving you the full story. If it is as they say it was, it would’ve been an admin oversight.

I’d have a read of your contract around the penalties and potential charges for not returning the car as agreed.

Thank you for the reply- I think from memory his car was supplied via Mitsubishi and the leasing company at the time regarded it as an informal extension in that he was paying month on month- Mitsubishi didn't appear to interested either way. He kept getting a monthly invoice from the leasing company showing out of contract and he simply carried in paying it. This was over 5 years ago mind, so may not apply now.
