CCC Unit fail - replacement vs upgrade to CIC/other?

Looks like the CCC unit on my (2006) 630i has shat itself.
Driving back tonight - screen suddenly just went black. No sound. Came up with SOS fail.
Soft reboot = nothing
Hard reboot (battery unplugged) = nothing.
Assume the CCC module has failed?
Is it a straight swap with a second hand item? I read online it needs to be coded to the car?
Is this a good opportunity to 'upgrade' to the later CIC system (or something else)? Is this even possible?
