Yummy CAKES :)
Discussion
Hope someone can help :-
I'm looking to buy a quality Fruit cake or Fresh cream Gateaux- 'LIKE MUM USED TO BAKE' - We've tried most of what's available from tesco/asda/M&S etc, etc. - basically they all have no taste or texture - can anyone suggest where to buy a decent quality 12"-15" dia fuit cake or Black forest type gateaux?? We used to have a local cake factory 'Ferraris' who made great quality cakes/pastries sadly now closed, we've also sourced good quality cakes from trade supplier 'Booker's' again they've stopped stocking them.
There must be a supplier somewhere in UK
Hope someone can help

I need to be able to pop in and buy one off the shelf - most cake shops only make large cakes to order, and everyone we've tried are just as bad as supermarkets - seem the art of cake making is getting close to a 'Lost Art' - OOI we were in France skiing in March most French pattiseries used to make fantastic =cakes - the ones we tried this year were also below par

Are you still mid-Wales as per your profile?
If so, have you tried Sidoli's in Welshpool? They have a factory shop but I don't know if they only have production overruns, seconds etc and thus no guarantee of coming out with a gateaux. Factory volumes of production might not be what you want though.
If you are coming further afield, there's Pont Bakery in Shrewsbury. Super pastries and they make cakes to order IIRC.

The factory shop is very cheap .....£6 for a very large cake. Also do large tubs of fillings, apple, rubarb etc. Tarts also... All frozen all cheap. Varies day to day.
I think the shop is open mon-fri.
My wife picks up a cake every now and then, portions them out and back in the freeze. I think we still have coffee and walnut and chocolate cake. I don't eat them these day but have done and they really are very good and a fraction of the cost.
Some years ago I received an American fruitcake for Christmas, shipped in a tin. I think it was one of these:

Mrs S47 is a chef and has a bit of paper to prove it!! - sadly her fruit cake has never worked - the fruit always ends up at the bottom -duh!!
and so she can't be arsed to make fruit cake because of this - cake always ends up in the bin
BUT:- if you can suggest how to stop the fruit ending up at the bottom I'll gladly try making one myself coz my cooking is better than most restaurants are capable of -

Fruit cake.
Try making one yourself.
You just about have time to get one matured in time for christmas if you make it this week.
Feed it with 25ml of brandy every 2 weeks until christmas.
My ex's mum, from the Caribbean, made her mix six months before Xmas. Best fruit cake I've ever tasted!Try making one yourself.

Fruit sinks because it's coated in mineral oil to stop it sticking in the bag. I'd give it a soak in lemon juice to get the oil off, then dry before adding.Mrs S47 is a chef and has a bit of paper to prove it!! - sadly her fruit cake has never worked - the fruit always ends up at the bottom -duh!!

Fruit cake by post is always Betty's when I need to send one as a gift but we're local enough to be able to pick them up in the shop(s) too.

Add some parkin, fat rascals, gooey rascals and supplement the normal fruit cake with a bonus Yorkshire Tea fruit cake.

In stark contrast I'm happy enough defrosting any old Black Forest, most of the "fancy" bakeries like Patisserie Valerie do it anyway so just cut out the middleman and spend £4.99 instead of £34.99.

Brandy, Maderia or Pedro ximenez sherry are always good for soaking the fruit.
