I found this story in The Guardian quite extraordinary. Basically a large and seemingly well organised and publicised 5K event in Tower Hamlets that has taken place for the last twelve years, completely excludes women of thirteen and over.

Most of the villages around here (South Cambs) hold charity fun runs. Can you imagine what response a similar rule would get?

It will be interesting to see what the brave campaigners against men only clubs etc. make of this one…

Well for starters non of my friends think of a 13 year old as a woman.
They may use the term girl but all of them would think of them as a child

having lived / worked in tower hamlets through Lutfer round 1, Biggs and Lutfer round 2. Nothing surprises me.

Its the most backward, corrupt and 3rd world place perhaps in the UK.

I don't understand why Lutfer gets so much bad press when he's so popular. 140% of voters can't be wrong!

digital ID in Tower Hamlets would be game changing for the population and politics.

rampant council house / benefit fraud , tax evasion, immigration offenses, illegal workers etc etc

Don't know what the outrage is all about.

The organisers have made it clear it was a family friendly and inclusive event (seriously!).

This was being discussed on LBC on the drive home.

Seems there's a bit of a gap in the law when religious freedoms and sexual discrimination collide.

Hmm, let me think.
Erm, yep, Nothing.

A bit like how the RSPCA say nothing about slitting the throats of non-stunned livestock, leaving them to bleed to death and die a horrific death in this country most likely.

But the usual crowd will form an orderly queue to dismiss everything of course.

I lived there before that. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and vilany!

I'm not sure what the gap is. Women only races seem to be legal. Why wouldn't men only races be? Or would you want to ban both?

Presumably the whole "boys and men are allowed regardless of age but only girls under 12" thing and how that being done for religious reasons is a "grey area" apparently around whether it trumps a woman's right not to be discriminated against because of their gender - I'm paraphrasing I don't remember the nuance.

Why the surprise? Millions of people with vastly different cultural and religious views have come to this country. Why should we expect them to adopt our culture.

They make a valid point that as female only events are legal why the problem with them having an event that excludes part of the population.

Much ado about nothing. Just like men only golf clubs were OK until they weren't.

That’s not really the point here. As I pointed out, these sort of community events are common throughout the country and they are comprised of lots of different races in one, with categorised results and sometimes even grouped starts to best accommodate all types of runners. So you effectively get your men only race and often even over 60s men only etc. etc.

The huge difference with this event seems to be that a large sector of the local population is excluded. I am assuming this is for cultural/religious reasons, but am frankly shocked by the scale of it. There are plenty of Muslim sportswomen in the UK as a whole, so it seems strange that something like this exists in an area of London

most middle eastern countries, even saudi, has mixed running clubs and events. modest activewear is a thing.

Not strange, 35% of the population are bangladeshi which if you take out canary wharf skews the numbers. its a bangladeshi slum run by a corrupt bangladeshi mayor and council of corrupt bangladeshi men. Of the 40 councillors - 10% are "english" the rest are bangla.

Im glad i moved out, i witnessed corruption first hand.

I don't see how that makes it different from the women only races. Most races are open to anyone, some aren't. Describing it as a gap in the law seems a stretch unless you'd also ban women only races.

Not sure if serious. Of course they should. The authorities should be all over this event; imagine if any other UK run event tried to ban "women".

TX.

I don’t consider that to be a valid point. Male only and female only sporting events are of course commonplace and fine. They are, however quite strictly defined - an under 13 girls football league for example.
This particular event is based on an inclusive and wide format (see your average village fun run or Parkruns) and then deliberately made exclusive.
