Tragic and up the road from me in the New Forest.

Wondering if this might be Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

That would be my guess. Wouldn't be surprised if a wood burning stove is the culprit

There are plenty of other ways to generate CO in a van in addition to a stove and any issue which restricts airflow into the space whilst there's combustion will lead to CO rather than CO2.

I first came upon the idea of having a wood burning stove in a camper van in Chamonix in the '90s. A mad German called Stefan had installed one in his decrepit converted van where he spent the whole winter dossing in the Grands Montets car park. It was unusual in those days but now there are rows of campers.

Seemed like a death wish to me but his skiing was even more dangerous.

Since the 'van life' craze took off, I've seen quite a few vans with stove pipes.

I’ve seen so many people cooking in tents / campervans with portable stoves over the years

So very sad

If I ever take up the van life... I'll remember to take a carbon monoxide alarm.

Tragic that a small cheap device might have been all that was needed to save them.

I watched a guy on YouTube who does camper builds, "Wills whereabouts"

He had a diesel heater running in a van when sleeping in it overnight, with the exhaust poked just out of a single open window, the same window the heater would be drawing air in from!! Oblivious and seems pretty common.

People have been killing themselves with carbon monoxide in boats and caravans forever.

A few drinks at a cider festival may not have helped.

Are the Mail just deliberately trolling with the local house price in literally every single article I see? Is it some kind of in-joke with the writers?

Sadly yes, the Heil uses (usually made up on the spot) house prices as an indication of social status.

It's downright weird but I expect nothing less from that absolute strag.

Not really for thread but I remember him, he showed me some epic routes off Grands Montets and the glacier Des Bossons. Five stars of nuts!

Anyway, sorry, shocking to have left 4 kids, especially when there really is so much van life about these days...

Small world, I messaged him on YouTube to advise him when I watched that, thankfully we knew he survived!

Given how easy it is to install them properly it seems pretty stupid, but there are a lot of ignorant people out there.

yes Pops up regularly in MAIB reports as fatalities or near-misses, either not installed properly in the first place or not maintained in a safe condition.

Agree, Not for the thread. We thought we were doing some challenging stuff back in the day when the top ride was cheap and easy but Stefan had no fear and humbled and scared us in equal measure

A friend of mine is one of these council wardens, picking up the jobs other agencies typically don’t have the time / rescource to deal with

Homeless people in tents is a regular one, sadly he does find people gassing themselves in tents by mistake, in an attempt to cook / keep warm

Sad stuff
