Mrs. DG is in desperate need of a new mobile phone, seen one she likes, it’s cute.

A little background, Mrs. DG gets through mobile phones at an incredible rate. Usually within the first couple of weeks it will have a cracked screen, then before a month is up, will require screen replacement.

Most will last 3 months at a stretch, before requiring a new replacement. She would love an ‘Apple’ phone, I’m sure they’re more robust, but I can’t stomach forking out £700 for something that’ll be destroyed in a couple of months.

I’ve tried ‘covers’ OAP style ‘phone cases’, they’re just no match her. I've insisted she buys her own phone, she has a small pension. However, all this is to no avail.

Recently we bought a nice set of ‘noise cancelling wireless headphones’ strict instructions “Don’t take them outside” She hates me controlling what she does, I share that feeling.

However, takes them outside, on the first occasion and they’re, you know ……….!

Now its new phone time, the options are;

Xiao Mi 15 pro, the more expensive of the two, also has a better specification, more robust.

Or a Xiao Mi note 15, the ‘cute one’ slightly cheaper, lower spec.

Here’s the problem, the latter (her preference) has a wrap around screen, I can’t see that being easy/cheap to replace.

She really enjoys her phones, the difficulty I have is getting her to engage in looking after the software/hardware, its just buy, use and abuse, buy again, but that’s not really sustainable, how to stop this cycle?

For reference, my tech doesn’t get broken, it just becomes obsolete, my phone is a Xiao Mi, 5 years old. As an aside, she looks after her car very well, every cloud and all that.

Not being funny but how does the break them?

Unless you're almost being wilfully negligent it's pretty difficult to do repeatedly to a phone in a case with a screen protector.

Sounds like my wife.

When I first me her I think I replaced the screen on her iPhone 4 around 3 times, then she inherited my 6S which had worked perfectly, screen protector not a scratch only to have the screen protector crack within days and then months later the home button stopped working because she'd glued it down with nail varnish as she was still using the phone while her nails dried.

She doesn't get my hand me downs now, and miraculously now she has to use her own money they seem to last longer, admittedly it's a decent case and a a good screen protector.

Maybe that's all she needs?

You will be glad to know she does manage to break a hell of a lot of stuff, most recently the lawn mower which is probably 2 years old, somehow managed to snap the metal handle.... how???? Needless to say it's not replaceable but luckily I found a guy that could weld it back together.

Have you tried an Otterbox phone case? I've had one of these on a succession of iphones and I've not damaged the phone underneath, yet.

Everyone in my family has battered and cracked phones. Ex wife and 3 grown up kids. Usually broken within weeks of purchase and again after repair.

Meanwhile I ran my Pixel 3a for over 6 years without a case and it still looks like new.

To my eyes all smartphones look the same, it's just a big screen really. How one is more cute than another I can't get my head around.
I've dropped phones a few times and never had 1 break.
I buy based on specifications/reviews/cost, I don't even care what colour it is because I put it in a bumper case lol

There are slim cases that reduce the chances of something breaking, through to cases that make phones pretty indestructible, however they add more bulk.

Its a choice you have to make based on your willingness to spend money when it breaks over how ‘cute’ it looks.

Rather than quote each individual response, I’ll provide a general answers..

Mrs. DG is a rather partial to mobile phone usage (I’m not complaining) the phone gets propped up in all kinds of locations, often falling from quite a height.

Also being an avid keep fit evangelist, it (mobile phone) often takes flight during various activities.

How many times a day can you drop a phone? Far more than you might think.

Often the phone is tossed on a bed/sofa/chair/table, I’ve tried to explain ‘shock’, it’s just not a notion she understand.

The Otterbox looks like a good idea, if we can match one with her phones configuration, that or a very sturdy case looks like the best solution.

Problem with most ‘cases/Otterbox’ the wrap round (yes Bluevanman) ‘cute’ style screen is no longer visible.

Ideally, I’d like to get her to engage with the phone more on a personal level; excuse me, I’m not very tech, but

Organise/delete files, virus checks, basic system maintenance etc.

She uses a Chinese (Harmony) operating system, yes you can switch to English, but not for everything.

The current phone has 256GB storage, that’s 82% full after (yes I know you can add an SD card) a couple of months, mainly apps and videos.

Luckily, there lots of businesses locally that do tech work on phones, whereas in some countries it would just be thrown it away, we often get them repaired.

I think what’s brought it to a head this time is wanting the cheap, ‘cute’ technically inferior phone as opposed to the more robust, better phone.

I’ve tried, bribes, incentives even black mail, I’ve sold the technical of the more expensive model, she’s having non of it, ‘cute one’ it will be.

None of this will be my choice.

Thank you for all the replies, food for thought.

Why is it your problem to look after her phone? If she doesn't like you controlling what she does with it and you don't, then don't.

Why don't you insure?

Honestly, reading the above I would be calling it quits, let her do as she chooses but at her own expense and hassle and wash my hands of all of it.

There is no reason that any normally functioning adult should be in this situation so repeatedly.

I’m probably inclined to agree with the last few comments, it shouldn’t be this way.

As far as I know, insurance isn't an option here.

I’ll do my best to help, but I think cost wise I’ll leave it up to her.

Does everything she touch break? Or, does she have a more delicate touch for certain other.....things?

By not giving a st because she gets free stuff and there are no consequences.
