I’m about a week away from taking delivery of a Kia Sportage. Whilst I liked the styling etc my only concern is getting my dogs in the back! I have a couple of Labradors and the eldest is starting to struggle to just up onto things. I’ve been looking at ramps but wondered if there are any other Kia owners that have transported their dogs and what mods they made?

Anyone else running the Kia? If so, what’s it been like to live with?

TIA

I’ve been running mine for 9 months and 10,000 miles. Cracking car for what it is. Super comfy, economical and picks its heal up swiftly enough. Compared to the offerings of BMW, Merc (being a Merc owner many times over) and VW, the Kia for me wins hands down.

Mine’s a HEV GT Line S, so it has every option, so that helps.

Can’t help re the dog access, but I’d recommend a protective mat for the top of the bumper at the tailgate. The gloss plastic will scratch easily so I’m super careful when I’m putting anything from shopping to my bike in the back.

SUVs and dogs really aren’t compatible. We’ve just got an X5 and I’m picking our ten year old Cockerpoo up rather than let her try and jump in and scratch something, or worse, jump down off the tailgate onto concrete and further knacker her joints.

Unfortunately the car choice is done so it’s a case of making the best of the situation. There’s only the 2 of us so folding the rear seats flat to make way for a cage or harnesses? I’m getting a ramp so that neither dog has to jump up or down.

Collection day tomorrow!

Hopefully I can stop looking at boot liners, dog crates and ramps soon?!

I’ve opted for a quilted boot liner that has a flap to protect the top of the bumper. The crate itself is aluminium and has a partition to allow me to easily get one dog out at a time!

The ramp is also aluminium and each section slides within another for easy storage with a rubberised coating to stop the dogs slipping. It’s not going to be as easy / convenient as just opening the side doors on my old Caddy, but it should still make for safe dog transportation and that’s what counts.
