Hi,

Looking for a diesel as my daily with a budget of around 5k that ideally gets 45+mpg but really unsure on what to get. I know I want an auto as I'm often sat in traffic, and I don't want it to look too "boring", whatever that means. I like the look of 3/5 series touring's but it would probs have to be a 20d at my budget and a lot of them around that price are high milage example and I am aware of the chain issues. Always used to hate saloons but they are growing on me so maybe another option?

Any recommendations?

Thanks !

The Honda 2.2 i-DTEC engine is very reliable and has a lot of torque. I've done 160k miles in mine with only a DPF filter issue. I get 39 mpg doing school runs, shopping, local journeys in mine which is an auto.

With all diesels, try to find one with the DPF filter replaced as this will remove the weak point.

The ES below was the ultra-low co2 company car version with smaller wheels to get it under the £30 road tax. There is also a GT with 170 bhp.

Easily get a 30D, 35D for that. Wouldn’t worry about the miles just have some patience and wait for the right one.

The Mercs are nice. C250/350 or E250/350.
Not exciting though.

I used to daily a 2014 C250 diesel estate, it was a great place to be.

The 2.1 engine is not very refined but goes well and is very reliable as-is the 7G gearbox.

There are loads about, you will be looking at over 100K miles, but they will easily do over 200K if looked after.

Obviously service history is everything.

There s boring handling and boring looks, or there s being bored with garage bills. Again.
Honda is a good shout.
I’m thinking Passat or similar.

Think you'll find this one is £315 VED not £30

Correct - but I think it was designed to get under the 166g/km threshold on the old CO2 based system. I'm sure when I bought mine it was £35 tax (but maybe I'm imagining that?)

You'll get a nice M30d for that budget, they come fully loaded (heated/air cooled seats great stereo) you'll see a real world 44mpg on a run & 30's around town & they're ULEZ compliant:

Or if you want newer there's the Q50 which uses the Mercedes 2.1d drivetrain:

The previous gen Insignia is a good option at this price point having a convetional auto makes the most sense:

What's parts availability like for Infiniti these days, if there's something out of the ordinary needed like a specific interior trim or body part?
