Cancelling SKY TV?
Discussion
Due to a change in personal circumstances we need to immediately cancel our Sķy contract after 25yrs.
SKY says I can't as I'm mid-Contract (this is true: was renewed in March 25). She told me early Termination is £500 - then backtracked and said I'd have to wait until March 26 and could not stop before.
I am prepared to pay a termination fee but I want cancel immediately. Is this legal- any advice?
NB: By the way do not use the contact email in their website 'help' section, mysky@sky . SKY says its a scam.

I'm not saying do this, obviously, but my Mum died a couple of months ago and the phone conversation with the bereavement team at Sky was brief, to the point, and required absolutely no proof it had actually happened. They even sent me a cheque for a partial month without prompting.
They must have upped their game then. When my grandmother passed about 17 years ago, they were awful. Asking for copies of death certificates, asking about the estate etc…. They got told to go forth and multiply and that their equipment would be left on the doorstep for them to collect whenever they wanted, never heard a thing after that but put me off using Sky for life.

£500!!!! really F*ck me, how much a month dol you pay for the service???? That's outrageous.
I pay £90 a month.£500!!!! really F*ck me, how much a month dol you pay for the service???? That's outrageous.
They are trying to say I cannot cancel until a month after the fixed contract ends which is March 27 as we're in a 2 tear deal.
If I cancel their direct debit they reckon a Court pursuit would follow.
I thought any contract could be terminated but i know there might be a cost.
If you are in genuine financial stress, they can offer you a reduction in service or payment holiday. You need to contact them and tell them that is the situation. They have a dedicated team to manage that. Don't use the cancel service.
If you are still struggling to make any progress, talk to citizens advice. They have some wonderful people there who are very helpful and are very good with financial stress issues.

It's a new tactic they use these days.
I had it with VM, I could not "cancel" until being inside or 1 day after (can't remember now), the last month my contract. This behaviour just reinforced my decision to leave them.
If any changes had been made to the services you were receiving, that would have triggered a new contract period.
It never used to be like this, I bailed on a Vodaphone contract once because their coverage was shocking, rang them up, paid the total due for the remaining term and that was it.
I suspect they keep you "on board" so you can continue to accidently spend on extras like moves or data or any other addons and then hope you'll forget for a month or 2 when your contract is actually up.
It's total s
tbag behaviour and shouldn't be allowed.

That figure should be:
• Based on how many months remain on your minimum term.
• Usually the monthly charge × remaining months, minus any costs Sky saves (like not having to provide service or pay content providers).
If £500 seems too high or inconsistent, you can ask for a breakdown of how it’s calculated — they’re required to provide one under Ofcom guidance.
A friend was a customer for decades, bill was over a ton, they would not budget on negotiations, so he simply used another family member to set up a new account, huge discount.
Not sure here as you are leaving a contract, I would speak to someone legally, ombudsman or Citizens advice maybe, there ought to be a way out really, what do they gain in all honesty

I think the "you can't cancel until 2026" is BS.Ending early is perfectly normal.
Early termination fees are perfectly normal.
£500 on a £90 monthly seems perfectly normal.
You can't cancel is NOT normal.

When I got divorced they said the same to me was paying £70 plus a month.
I was part way through a contract, I stopped the direct debit they cancelled my contract sent me postage to return Sky Q kit etc.
I never saw a mark on my credit file, they did send me £100 bill which I ignored and 5 years later not paid them.
They will always take you as a new customer again with the best deals.
Same with their BB, never got the U switch deal I was supposed, then was paying £37 a month for internet sky tv and broadband.
They finished my contract and said it would be 56 just for broadband and 18 for TV. Or £43 for BB if I signed up for 2 years. I found £31.99 for fast fibre cancelled then they offered £35 a month!

Strange that, each & every "new contract" I negotiate a significant discount, normally along with freebie movies etc.RotorRambler said:

Plus it should factor in that they get all the money now rather than spread over the next 6 monthsThat figure should be:
