Mercedes Land at Brooklands
Sacrilege or welcome investment?
Discussion
MB have shown a sensitivity towards Motoring history and their development is, at least, motor related. Any thing that helps to bring in money and keep out less sensitive and non motor related developments has to be a good thing, I'd love to see the Silver Arrows showing off on 'track days'.
Back in its glory days Brooklands was graced by a wide range of continental marques, good to see at least one comming back.
The real test will be the planning application, I will not be the only person to take more than a passing interest in the detail.

If Mercedes - a classic company with heritage that it holds to - does this, then hopefully others will follow it's lead - racing centres for Jaguar, Lotus, MG etc would be a welcome addition to the various UK circuits such as Oulton Park and Snetterton - plus there would be something to look at when the supporting XR2 championships are running
And if they build anything like the Mercedes Museum at Stuttgart at Brooklands, I'm afraid that it will show all UK Motor Museums how it should be done.
And for anyone who was thinking about complaining about this, at least it went to a car manufacturer and not some developer who will just build more glamourous but not in keeping the history buildings like the Sony complex at Brooklands.

Too right!
As a fan of Brooklands as a motoring venue I would rather see MB build an eyesore (I don't think they will mind) in the centre than see it flattened to make room for another supermarket or cul-de-sac.
The only proviso on that is they let the various clubs and organisations that hire Brooklands out use their facilities of course
At least the likes of Auto-Italia could have a decent track to show off on (not that I have any ulteria motives or anything)

I think its a great idea.
If anyone has written anything on the matter by Brooklands nut Bill Boddy you'll find that there have always been racing with those cars- Benz, Daimlars, Mercedes (not the same to begin with), then Mercedes-Benz. Think big, supercharged SSKL's. Very nice machinery.
And Chrysler?? Didn't WO Bentley start by racing a Dodge???
It will be great. And hnopefully it will give the Brooklands trust much needed cash.
Good for them.

So a bit like Lotus Hethel Test track where all the test mules are run - all the owners clubs are invited for open days (factory and circuit) where one off race series races are held and owners have been given tuition in race techniques
So fairly similar then - perhaps this is more like others following the lotus lead ?
(actually IMHO this is to do with Mercs plans to change there distribution channels as a result of the EU competition inquiry into dealerships.
Merc are changing to a superstore type set up with THREE dealerships and then approved servicing facilties that are arms length from MB UK )
cartel anyone ?

Agreed - If I recall correctly from my visit four or five years ago: Free bus service from factory gates to the museum and free entry once there
