Could the most hated car (Range Rover) be actually the best?
Discussion
If you think about it, there's no car that offers as much as a Range Rover: performance, space, beauty, luxury, image, quality, safety, versatility, technology, equipment, tradition, etc., for a much lower price than similarly luxurious cars (Bentley and Rolls-Royce). Of course, reliability is another issue, but that's a problem with European cars, and as a rule, the more expensive they are, the less reliable they are.
However, the Range Rover is also the most hated car, for being British, for being a symbol of wealth, for being too beautiful.
What do you think?
I think the sarcasm is strong in this one. The whole point of a car (for most people) is to have a vehicle that can get you from A to B. It doesn't take much searching to find loads of horror stories of Range Rovers spending more time in the workshop due to reliability issues and a lack of spare parts. They also seem to be a massive target for thieves, which has resulted in them being extremely difficult/expensive to insure, assuming you can find anyone offering to cover them.
Frankly, I wouldn't have one if they were giving them away.

German cars also have huge reliability problems, and are almost always at the bottom of reliability studies, but they are not hated like Land/Range Rover. Range Rover is so hated because it is British.Frankly, I wouldn't have one if they were giving them away.
I can't say I've ever seen hate towards Range Rovers other than where the hate is actually on the stereotypical owners (think school run bimbo or "gangsta")
You are also kidding yourself if you think they are equivalent to a Rolls Royce in any way.
They're a good all rounder but not the best in any of the categories you mention. If I was after this size of car I don't even think it would make my top 5 tbh. Volvo, Polestar, BMW, Audi all make cars I like better for the money and they are less likely to be stolen or break down.

That hated that in nearly every group of cars on my commute there is typically at least one range/land rover product of some form?
National brands have decent sales in their home market. That's how it works. But Land Rover could definitely sell much more if it weren't so hated.John87 said:

Did you know that top spec BMW and Audi are some of the least reliable cars on the market? You are also kidding yourself if you think they are equivalent to a Rolls Royce in any way.

They are better in what? Volvo only in safety and price.
I think part of it is jealousy, but an even bigger part is the stereotypical owner attracts hatred. No different from BMW drivers (and growing number of audi drivers).
It's cause and effect, people see certain behaviour carried out by BMW/Audi drivers, and they see the type of people that often drive RRs, you then get confirmation bias aided by threads like this, stories, social media etc and hey presto, we hate the cars.
Probably an interesting study for someone, why are certain types attracted to certain cars, what is that type, how many owners are really like that, how many does it take before that becomes the image of the car etc.

Bmw and Audi are not hated, at all. You can't compare. It's cause and effect, people see certain behaviour carried out by BMW/Audi drivers, and they see the type of people that often drive RRs, you then get confirmation bias aided by threads like this, stories, social media etc and hey presto, we hate the cars.

They are just at the opposite extreme in terms of image. People think that they are the best.
Most people talk about Land/Range Rover as if it were the worst car in the world, when most of them have never owned one. This is surreal. Considering that British brands are so hated (for a number of reasons related to being British, and this leads us to the xenophobia against the British), Range Rover is probably the most hated because it is the best and the most visibility on the road. The human mind is perverse.

The Range Rover is very nice inside or out but not on a par with the equivalent Bentley or Rolls-Royce models when it comes to luxury, fit and finish, which is appropriate given the price difference. I think you are kidding yourself if you think they are similar. However, the Range Rover is also the most hated car, for being British, for being a symbol of wealth, for being too beautiful.

I dont hate Range Rovers ?
Might find its not the cars so much, or even the owners and the issue lies with those who would like one but dont have the means, so resentment of the owners perceived success might be a bigger factor. Its often psychological defence mechanism,
Someone says:
“Range Rovers are overrated. I’d never waste money on one — they're just flashy status symbols for insecure people.”
But what's often unspoken is:
“I can’t afford one, and that makes me uncomfortable, so I’ll devalue it instead.”
Its like the fat ugly bloke in the pub calling some attractive actress "a dog" or similar, but if she came in the pub and spoke to him he would change his tune.
Its a very expensive car when new so you get that sneering off a lot as they know it cost more than they ever could afford, then as it migrates down you get some more sneering "He thinks he is the boss as he has an old Range Rover".
I think in part the hatred of EVs from some is down to them having a budget that wouldnt run to one anyway and they think their 2009 320D is the dogs b
ks and cannot be bettered so why bother.
But, give the average punter a lottery win, say 4 million quid to be on the safe side, then see what they buy.
I am not immune to this of course but I do try to think what my motivation, and would I have a Range Rover, yep, definitely. Plus as I always say, dont rule stuff out as your wants, needs and circumstances may change and thinks you never thought possible become an option, like Lee when he picks up his first EV

I think that maybe you hate Range Rovers, or what you think that they represent. What do you think?
Have you got any data or evidence that this 'hate' extends to anyone other than yourself?
