Greatest Driving Road
Discussion
Hi,
On the top gear website today, there's an article celebrating 200 years of the Stelvio pass.
However in the article it says it's not the greatest driving road in the world. This got me thinking what is then?
Just to add I've driven abroad a few times but just from the airport to the hotel etc. In a 1 litre hire car so can't really give an opinion.
I did like Croatia though, it was a couple of hours from Dubrovnik Airport to Orebic where our hotel was.
Hopefully in the future, I'll get to tick of the roads suggested in the replies.
Cheers.

Stelvio is a lovely road the Bormio side, but it's the other side you always see in photos with the massive amount of hairpins that's no where near as much fun.
IMO some of the best roads aren't the ones everyone knows about. We got fed up with the traffic around Lake Garda many years ago and decided to just head in to the hills. We ended up on the road past Lake Valvestino which was stunning.

A personal fave of mine is the A397 from Puerto Banus to Rhonda
Time it to avoid the traffic and it's very entertaining. There is a great cafe about 1/2 way with brilliant views .. Watching bikes coming round knee down is a thing to behold !
Spain to Wales is a long drive. Or did you mean Ronda?Time it to avoid the traffic and it's very entertaining. There is a great cafe about 1/2 way with brilliant views .. Watching bikes coming round knee down is a thing to behold !
The best I've personally done was the IoM TT mountain road, very early in the morning. We were super, super lucky...I can only describe the scene as being akin to having died and gone to car heaven, the sun was just coming up behind the hills as the mist was lifting and I was in a brand new and freshly run-in GT4. No speed limits, perfect smooth tarmac, rumble strips permanently in place and amazing long distance visibility. Our group were the only cars on the road, certainly a core memory.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road 48 kilometres long with 36 corners. Toll road (about 38 quid last time I did it) so very few people on it. If you chat nicely to toll booth operator , they will let you know if there are any police around.
Alternatively pretty much any mountain road in Spanish Pyrenees which are free

This many times over. Every year when it’s made one way only for the TT fortnight it turns into simply the best fun ever.Even when it’s two way traffic it’s still sublime. Legal madness.

Have to agree, did it in the Noble M400 last year, and looking to go back in the new wheels in 2026,it's xactly as you describe. The Sloc mountain road we had closed in one direction for a while so made it even better.Very weather dependent though.
