Sodastream - just for soda ?
Discussion
Who uses on of these purely for soda water ?
Not interested in the syrups at all.
I have always had a bottle of sparkling water in the fridge, but since quitting alcohol, I’m getting through a lot of it , and the plastic waste bothers me.
I’ve read that a lot of people are only getting 30l of decent soda from a co2 bottle, so I know it’s going to be dearer than the £5/6 for 8 litres from Tesco

We have an Aarke machine we use exclusively for sparking water. Not the cheapest @ c.£250 initial outlay with some extra water bottles and extra cylinders, eliminating plastic waste and shopping volume was the driver for us, not cost
We get c.50L sparkling water per cylinder and pay £11 for a cylinder refill so variable cost of 22p/L not including up front cost.
I estimate we ve made c.500L in 2 years, which equates to 50p/L spreading the up-front cost over this. Total c.72p per litre which is similar to your Tesco figure
But fast forward say 2 more years. 1000L total, up front cost now 25p/L and overall cost would reduce to 47p/L and keep on falling the more you make
Downside, you have to make it! But it’s so quick and easy it doesn’t even register with us
Upsides:
You never run out if you have say 3 cylinders and send off two off to be refilled once they're empty
No annoying plastic bottle tops :-)
No plastic waste

I haven't actually replaced my CO2 bottle in ages because I seem to have about 10 empty ones that I need to get around to sending back for refund
But, we usually only ever used it to have fizzy water in the fridge to then drink with Elderflower cordial. Never anything else. Did the job very well and saved on buying tons of bottled fizzy water.
I must get on the case

We have a quooker Tap.......
The Mrs wanted it and i fought long and hard against it.......
Turns out its brilliant. I don't consume hot drinks, so for me the only feature was the sparking water. We get about a months use out of each Co2 canister. Not sure if that makes it cheaper than buying it but that dosnt matter, it all about the convenience. Not having to carry a load of heavy bottles out of the supermarket once a week and having them roll around the car is worth it on its own!
Also just walking to the tap to fill a glass feels so much easier than having to go to the fridge to open a bottle. I suppose we have more fridge space as well, Hadn't thought of that.
Cant say the environmental impact ever crossed my mind but i guess that can score me some brownie points in certain circles.
I have actually used the instant boiling water feature more than i expected. Great when cooking pasta etc
