Ideas for speed camera app - requirements
Discussion
Hi fellow petrolheads.
Its my first time posting here, but this forum has helped me in the past understand many things around motoring in UK. Hope everyone is doing well.
am a solutions architect and along with a friend of mine, software engineer, we have started creating a speed camera app.
The reason for taking this initiative is because I think that the apps that are around (and there are of course some very good ones) , do not satisfy the needs of the average driver in different aspects - way of alerting , how many yards before, with speech or with just sound etc. We are trying to understand requirements, so if anyone wants to have an input of what they would like from a camera app that is still missing, please write it here to take it in consideration. Our aim for this app is of course not to compete with large organizations, but to create an app that will talk directly to the hearts of the average fellow driver in the UK.
Thank you

Half the time I would value an app that tells me what the actual limit is, variable limits that change but with signage that is only half operable, or 20 zones with small signs can lead to confusion, especially as Waze is often not correct.
And shows your GPS-verified speed next to the current limit maybe. With the ability to have it make funny noises if you go past a certain amount over.Sporky said:

It's a balance between not encouraging speeding, but also knowing when to relax a little and not worry so much.

My built-in system already does this, along with a reasonable stab at sign recognition While I'm not sure I can back this up, I get the impression that a lot of people caught speeding don't seem to know what the limit was or how fast they were going. Anyone who falls into that sort of thing would benefit from a good obvious display.

Indeed, GPS speed next to actual speed, as well as average speed over a distance where relevant.
The Tom Tom app shows you your average speed in average speed camera zones and is brilliant so this would be really helpful. Am I right in thinking that the police publish online where mobile speed cameras will be? I'm sure they said it on my speed awareness course. Be great if the app could be updated with these as they are published. Although not sure how you'd do that from an IT point of view.
Using Waze as a starting point - here's my 2p worth.
Needs to be a navigation app with speed camera notification - If I need to be told about fixed speed cameras then I'll be somewhere unfamiliar, therefore navigation is compulsory.
Android Auto integration is a must (presumably apple carplay too).
The ability to distinguish between average speed cameras and "normal" speed cameras. No notifications for individual average speed cameras within a zone - just notifications for the average speed zone itself - including how much longer it has to go and also your current average speed through the zone. Probably a configurable option to break average speed zones down into sub-zones that go from camera to camera.
I have absolutely zero idea how you address this one, but some kind of granularity / quality control of user reports of "police". There's a massive difference between a speed camera van on a motorway bridge, a Police Car at the side of a motorway and a Highways England Traffic Car at the side of a motorway. On Waze these all look the same.

No. The police are not obliged to publish where mobile speed cameras are. I have recently seen quite a few handheld cameras used by police motorcyclists parked up.Billy Eyelash said:
An average speed recorder. Press a button to start, and it should display my average speed from that point along with the speed limit. Even better, start it automatically and reset automatically when it passes another average speed camera.
That's got Personal Best trouble written all over it
