I'm going to have a couple of days to myself in Durban in November. Anyone been, any tips? I won't have a car, so walking and public transport only. Will be staying on the Golden Mile, open to hotel recommendations.

Can’t help with Durban I’m afraid. Another medical courier job I am guessing?

I am intrigued as to how this works and what are you couriering? Sounds like an interesting thing to do to see the world without paying for it.

Any human stuff really, rarely organs as the time limits don't work, but bone marrow, tissues, cells, whatever. As I'm UK based, I pick up from where the donor is, and deliver it to a UK recipient. There's a huge team of logistics experts, medics and whatnot doing all the important organisation and matching, I'm just the dummy who picks up and drops off. A very small cog in a large lifesaving machine. But one that can't afford to fail when it's turning. So a lot of pressure.

UK/UK is usually done in a day, Europe/UK is an overnight stay, and long haul is usually the balance of the day you arrive, and 2 clear days off, before collection and flight back. Even though the work is unpaid, H&S still applies and they can't send you on a long haul flight and then fly you straight back a couple of hours later.

Anyway, back to Durban. Surely someone has some insight. The is PH, about 5 of you must have beachside luxury holiday homes on the Indian Ocean??

Thanks Twig - sounds really interesting and far more exotic than my volunteer driving for the NHS!

The exotic trips can be....exotic. But as I'm London based there's a lot of London to other UK cities and other London destinations. I tend not to ask advice on here about how to fill a few hours to spare in Doncaster! So don't think it's all glamour.

And the paperwork......urgghh. Import paperwork, export paperwork, customs clearance paperwork, and absolute mountain of the stuff. All of which has to be completed in the right order at the right time. Get this stamped here, get that stamped there.

And when you're back home and it's all done, you've got to do all the sign off paperwork.

There's a lot of paperwork.

about to disappoint too. Ive been there, about 20 years ago as a GF parents lived there but we spent a lot of time on the other side, Cape Town etc., one thing I do remember is the flight from Cape Town as it landed in Durban, blew out a couple of tyres. regular sized plane doing a little bit of drifting. but all ok.

anywho.. not much help but I wouldn't be walking around in the evening unless you are in a busy area.

Long time since I've been there but I attended a conference at the Suncoast Casino. That will while away some time.

Did you write that what you do is unpaid? I'm guessing all the transport/expenses are covered? Is this a retirement gig?

Yes, a volunteer role, and yes, I'm retired. Flights (economy), hotel (nothing fancy, but normal business style, £100/night Premier Inn type level) paid for, plus a subsistence allowance all included. The only thing I pay for is to entertain myself.

It's ideal for me. I love travel, and exploring new places, but my wife isn't keen. She thinks it's all too much of a faff. Plus on average I'm away from home about 12 nights a month, which I think she likes hehe

That sounds quite an interesting hobby. If you don't mind, would you mind sharing the details of the company that you work with.
I understand if you'd rather not say.

It's all quite confidential I'm afraid. And couriers are only recruited thru existing courier referral anyway.

Yes, that's a perk, you get to keep your own airmiles, although spread across various airlines. I've hit BA Silver so have lounge access, fast track security and priority boarding, which I can use if I managed to talk the wife into a Euro city break.

If I could add them all together, I'd have enough for a trip to Venus!

Hotel points too, again spread across various providers. That's less useful. They also pay for an over 60 rail card and all your passport renewal and visa costs. That obviously benefits you personally. And of course I'm not paying for food and other living expenses for the 10-12 days I'm away each month.

It is a dirty crime ridden st hole. I wouldn’t even bother. Make sure you have filled in your donor card and whatever you do don’t get lost.

Been a few times. Its not the greatest place in SA to visit however the Oyster Box is a lovely hotel and the curry breakfast is unbelievable.

I tend to use it as a stop off before heading to phinda for safari.

I’ve been a few times in the last 5 years and it’s not the best. Stay safe and don’t be too adventurous would be my recommendation.

Yeah Durban isn't as good as other parts of SA

Echo positive comments on the Oyster Box, also thought the aquarium was quite good when last there. Uber is ubiquitous and far safer than their "taxi's"

Alan Whicker actually.
Been once en route elsewhere. You can google the stats to see what the in comers have done to the place over many decades.
Friend born there now living in UK, watched his mum and 11 year old sister gang raped, they then shot his father and robbed the house.
