My Polo was unfortunately stolen and having received an insurance payout I need a new car. I haven't car hunted for 10 years so slightly out of the loop.

Any help appreciated in recommending a replacement car that can either fit a larger dog on the back seats or in the boot

Hopefully in the info below is enough for a few suggestions.

Must haves
Auto
Petrol or Plug in Hybrid
5 Door

Should haves
Larger boot
Reversing camera
Sat nav
Economical

Toyota Corolla Touring Sports (estate) ticks those boxes and would be an excellent choice IMO.

You didn’t give a budget but the facelifted model (from March 2023) before they introduced speed alert bongs that you can’t permanently turn off (from March 2024) is the sweet spot.

Plenty of Corolla Touring Sports at 20K or under but almost all are pre-facelift (2019-2022) cars. The 2023 onwards facelift models are definitely worth paying more for as the revisions were substantial, including improved interiors, spec improvements, and all facelifted cars getting the fifth-generation hybrid drivetrain (more power, improved efficiency).

Stretch your budget a bit and cars like this will be available

And this chap gives an excellent (honest and comprehensive) review of the 2023 Toyota Corolla TS (including the benefits of the facelift).

If you’ve had a Polo for such a long time, I would definitely stick to something German. I remember a salesman telling me in 1996 that I would hate the Rover 827 Vitesse I was looking at (on his forecourt) as the owner of a BMW 320i SE. He was right.

I would be looking at a Golf, Audi A3 or 1 Series and you won’t be disappointed.
