Discussion
Am going to be doing MSUK sprints next year in a standard road car, and would like to clear up a few things.
Firstly, have spoken to series people, they just give me the runaround and say read the blue book which is as clear as mud on certain things.
Standard car, 1.6 litre. Clothing wise, I need a Snell 2020 lid, no need for anything else, no gloves, boots or suit, but arms and legs covered. Interclub is the licence.
Now, does this mean if I wore a suit, even though not required, it has to be MSUK approved, so I can't wear a Proban, kart suit or something? I also have gloves, they are FIA 8896 something. Just don't want to turn up and be fail scrutineering just from assumption or lack of understanding, some of it is unclear in the blue book.
The rest is basics, timing strut, a few decals for tow, battery, ignition and numbers.
Thanks in advance

I think you are correct that you can wear a Proban or a kart suit. However, it depends on how much time you want to spend arguing with scrutineers. I have an FIA 8856 suit that I sometimes wear, or sometimes I wear normal clothes. Once when I was wearing the suit I was told the collar had to be done up, which is odd as I don't have to wear it. The 'Blue Book' has been replaced with the National Competition Rules (NCR). You can access this online or via the APP. The guidelines for competition clothing are in Ch.9

Once you have decided which level / series you are going to enter, you can request a copy of the Regs for that specific series from the organisers and they should specify what level of safety equipment you will need. It may just refer to a page in the NCR (link above).

My experience of dealing with scruts at sprints is if you aren't required to have something, either don't have it at all, or if for any reason you choose to have it, then make sure it meets the required spec for the discipline/class you are competing in.

I think this is the best advice yes
What are folks opinions on helmets, it seems Snell rating is largely US. Recognised but inferior to Fia 8859 or whatever, I can get a Snell 2025 for less than 300, never going to use it in anything else. Fia stuff you are looking at 400, full face only

Spend a few minutes reading the national regulations, see extract below. Chapter 14 for speed events. I can’t see any problem wearing improved safety gear above the basic requirements.

Be aware that some clubs apply more stringent requirements, perhaps have a read of the event regulations from this season.

I wouldn’t have any issue with SNELL, and I would have used one if the Zamp helmet suited my head. The 2025 standard isnt yet in the UK regulations, so worth checking that the 2026 regs allow. What are folks opinions on helmets, it seems Snell rating is largely US. Also be aware that the new FIA 8859-2024 helmets have just launched, and there’s some fairly reasonable options.

Indeed the Zamps are quite nice, not seen many 2025 you are right so might hold fire, need to find a way to measure my head lol
My dad has one and it is a fine bit of kit, plus I think you get 10% off as a MSUK licence holder. Next year's regs should be out in the next couple of weeks so maybe wait until then.bergclimber34 said:
Oh you won't I have never done anything, was checking results etc recently, saw you and your Dad sprint together in 1A. Worked it out from your username. Very good too!!
Always good to have some more people to come along and beat us! I believe one of the juniors is eligible for our class next year and she was worryingly fast. bergclimber34 said:
Mate from what I gather you have been at this a long time, I doubt I would be anywhere near! But am hopeful to be out there in the new year.
Started in 2009 in my road car (BMW Z4M Coupe) then decided getting a cheap car would be a safer option. Which turned out to be the case as my dad end-over-ended our first Citroen Saxo. Timely post for me, I’ve had a go at a couple of autosolos in the last couple of months and now thinking to try sprints, like you in a completely standard roadcar. Given this is a first dip of a toe, I had wanted to post “what’s the cheapest sprint-suitable helmet I can get” ; on the basis I might have a go and decide it’s not for me; but could imagine the answers that might attract!!!
