I'm tempted Pesty, really I am. but I'll resist it.

I always think it's nice to buy them two things, a small one: for now and another for later in life. That leaving school moment, marriage etc? That way you: "the godfather" keep your duty to her.....a "wedding" ring from you maybe?...... (although of course the "groom" may have "first" rights).

I checked out the local Christian bookshop. They had some nice kiddies' Bibles, with a picture-book format and (heavily-abridged, of course) kiddie-friendly text.

I think fighting with the father in church may be a little uncouth

No reason that there couldn't be one from you (the Godfather)for her as well after the ceremony? Seriously, think about it, a ring, bought and promised to her at the time of her birth by her Godfather when she gets married?.....

I think it's a great way for you, to be remembered by her....

I have four God daughters.

Something like a nice little wooden jewellery box from an antiquey/nick nack shop is always nice. You can pick up a little mahogany box with some nice inlaid mother-of-pearl or similar for £50-£60.

My cousin just asked me to be a godfather to his first son. A great honour etc but I'm not going to get involved in any church ceremony as I'm an atheist and refuse to sing silly songs and renounce the devil etc. I went to a christening recently and was quite horrified by the nonsense.

However since there's no god, that makes me 'father', which doesn't seem right!!

£50, well how about a Gold Sovereign. Over the years of you're feeling generous you can give her a Sovereign each year for her bday. Eventually adds up to a nice little nest egg.

My mrs god father did this until she was 21, so she has 21 gold sovereigns...cool.

sounds good in theory but what if they have a couple more sprogs? they will have to have the same and thats £6480

I went over my budget as it is. then there is the three outsfits I had to buy yesterday because the 3 outfits I bought for the misses and 2 kids last month for a wedding can't be worn to a christening apparently + new shoes acrds etc etc.

Ive spent £1k just going to other peoples parties in the last month .

could have bought some bilsteins for that
