Ibuprofen

Had a terrible month as a result of ulcers in my stomach and oesophagus, this lead to internal bleeding, anaemia and complete loss of appetite which caused a big weight loss and what felt like indigestion 24/7.

I was interested in knowing what might have caused the ulcers in addition to H Pylori.

Doc: Do you take ibuprofen?
Me: One before going to sleep
Doc: On an empty stomach?
Me: I don't eat during the evening
Doc: Only take Ibuprofen after food, Paracetomol is better but still not perfect

The leaflet should say best taken with food.

Sounds about right, it's fairly well known to not take ibuprofen on an empty stomach..

Ibuprofen is. Generally terrible thing to take and known to be awful for your stomachs, worse so on an empty stomach. Long term use can leave you with real stomach issues.

That was my experience.

I was taking one at bedtime to help with back ache.

I have stomach issues and take Lansaprazole. I don't take Ibuprofen at all due to my stomach condition. I take paracetemol and just live with the compromise (not so effective).

I would advise you not to take Ibuprofen. Is your back issue a long term unresolvable condition or is that something you can work on?

Ibuprofen has its problems but taking on an empty stomach is a no no.

Doesn't anyone read the leaflet that comes with the stuff anymore?

I have been prescribed Lansaprazole.

I agree not to take ibruprofen and I will cope with the back pain.

My understanding was that ibruprofen was a safer option for stomachs as compared to aspirin but it became a habit.

The reason why I started this thread was as a warning to others, pure and simple.

Interestingly if you are doing ultra runs they recommend not taking ibuprofen as it can cause some serious stomach issues.

Yes you are correct. Don't take aspirin. That's also bad. Only use paracetemol.

If you take the ibuprofen with food, most likely you will be fine. Taking the lansoprazole also helps with ibuprofen, and is actually sometimes prescribed with it.

Have you tried using the ibruprofen gel in place of the oral version ? That doesn’t have the side alleges issue .

Voltarol is another gel but stronger, can make the skin sore if used for extended periods if you read the instructions.

Part of the non steroid anti inflamitory drug family, I end up looking like the elephant after a few rounds with Mike Tyson plus feet and hands on fire.
Asprin, nexaproxyn and another one are the worst.
Always paracetomal these days.

It’s more about the kidneys than the stomach in this context.

After covid ibruprofen makes me come out in wierd sub skin reuting rashes that go red and act liek a wave dicapating outwards.

Having Crohn's Disease for over 30 years, ibuprofen and aspirin are a definite no.
Tends to aggrivate rather than relieve any internal bleeding in stomach.
