Hellooo!

Just saw this so a bit late! But yes, here in Singapore. Not too much to fear from the ghouls out here though.

Sadly not permanent postings anymore, I did 4 years in Angola and 5 years in Dubai in a former career.
Now UK based but travel (USA / Europe) about 1/4 of the year.

Came here via your other thread.

Yes, also Africa. Currently have residency in 3 countries, none of which I want to call home.

I was an oil worker in a previous life. Now i am in Iraq. Africa is on the list as its somewhere i have never worked. Also wouldn't mind working on a ship. I enjoyed my time on the rigs, i like the sea!

Just don't know where you will end up in life.

Work overseas (offshore / onshore O&G) the majority of the year currently in the Paris office, this year been a little quiet so only been in Brazil, Turkey, Paris and Ireland but seems like off to UAE in January followed by trips to Saudi and Iraq.

Not currently, but did 2 years in the UAE 2000 to 2002 followed by a further 4 years (2008 to 2012). I travelled (with work extensively in the area in my second visit.

I would recommend working abroad to anyone as it’s a great experience.

Anyone else been working away over Christmas? I travel home in January after a 12 week stint. Looking forward to the time off. Don't think i am going to go on holiday when i get back, see how the mrs feels and see if i fancy it. Last time on my R+R i didn't stop i felt like i did to much so going to chill out more this time.

Probably have a few days/ nights out with the boys. Some nice meals with the mrs, if we dont go abroad we might go London or something have a few nights out in the uk.

Keep looking at cars while I'm away thinking should i get something for when i am at home but i think its pretty pointless really sitting in the garage doing nothing most of the time. Not even sure what i fancy (this is pistonheads after all) always liked Ferrari. I would fancy a 488 but it wouldn't be the most sensible of ideas really. Caterham itch is also something else id like to scratch a lot cheaper to get into than a Ferrari and after January i will be home April/May and August so at least then i could hopefully use one.

Never had a 911 and it would be more useable but i wasn't much of a fan of my 981 GT4 so a 911 might not be for me.

Sorry for the rambling, just bored being away from home as im sure some in this thread can relate to.

The longest I was abroad working without a visitor or coming home was 7 weeks, so can relate to your thoughts about being bored and lonely.

If you’re going to be working overseas for the foreseeable future, I would refrain from buying a car in the UK. As I recall insurance was quite complicated when I looked into it.

I’ve done 3 month trips in the past. Gave it up though as I prefer to be with my family.

Forget fancy cars which will sit doing nothing, Use the money you make to work for you so don’t need to spend all your best years working overseas!

I agree with both of you. Forget the cars and make my money work for me so I can enjoy life later. Just more interesting looking at pistonheads than my stocks and shares and reducing mortgage!

12 weeks is a long time really. But then I remind myself I have mates who are ex military who have been in some horrible situations over here. Different prospective on things then!

4 weeks on is normal for me but I did a 17 week stint over summer as my oppo went into hospital during his leave period. In that time I caught typhoid and was >this< close to jacking.

I’m looking to change my t&c’s so hoping my year end review is sparkling enough to enable it. I do enjoy my role but the work:life balance is not good.

The longest I did was 6 months during CV19, I’d gone back just as the pandemic broke & was then pretty much trapped where I was for the next 6 months.

Christmas can be a tough time if you have family & are overseas. I did around 20yrs overseas & got home for all but 1 & was single then so didn’t matter too much. Another ocassion though I got home around 1am Christmas Day & left again 6pm Boxing Day!

Got out here 1st September, I'll be flying home 31st March unless they extend me again as I took the redundancy offer. Not the longest stint away, 10 months over COVID but looking forward to being back home. Might not get the same money, but house is paid, cars all owned and pension account is healthy so maybe it's the best thing. Time is a currency I've been short of, so will be good to get a bit more balance.

Reality is, I'll just be able to buy less of the stuff I don't need!

That is a long rotation in Africa! I agree money isn’t everything. My outlook changed a few years ago. I thought I can always earn more money but I can’t buy time so just make the most of life. Of course you need the money and it can become a bit of a vicious circle.

My last day out here today I fly home at 3:00am. Looking forward to it. Strange though it feels like I have been here forever but my 12 weeks have also gone pretty quick as well.

What do people do on their time off? I went mad last time and probably tried to do too much. Being honest I think I will probably do the same this time as well. Just try and cram in as much as you can.

First week is just chilling and going out. Going out on Friday with an old mate. I was his apprentice actually and he is in his 70 s taking him and his Mrs out for a curry. But it s escalated and I think 20 people are going now. Should be good. Saturday is a big piss up with the boys.

Going to hopefully go on holiday on my middle week. Either the Caribbean or Maldives. Not looking forward to the cold weather at home! Although we have had some biblical rain in Iraq!

Last week will probably just chill. I know the Mrs wants to go shopping at Cheshire oaks at some point. I don t mind I will buy some new running trainers and probably have a look in the Porsche garage down the road . But as we said on this thread pretty pointless buying an expensive car isn t it.

I’m very much of the opinion that time is more valuable, but there’s a point where the money gets very difficult to turn down. I’m normally two weeks on, two weeks off, but have just signed up for a three month stint for triple pay. I should get home for a week or so a couple of time as well, so it’s not all bad. My view is that there’s a bit of an economic storm coming so I’m making some hay while the sun shines.

Currently sat by the pool in Nigeria while it’s pissing it down and freezing cold back home, so it doesn’t seem too bad. But the thought of seven months stuck in the same place in Africa like the OP……….that’s a hard no from me - whatever the pay!

My longest Africa stint (in Luanda) was 16 weeks, I then was back in the UK for 5 days before another 13 week stint - in fact I did that kind of thing for almost 18 months as the business owner didn't want to hire anyone else as he trusted me..... I really didn't mind though, $850 a day with all expenses paid had quite an effect on my finances!
