My daughter started our riding an Aprilia 50 CC from age 16. She's been driving the family Mini Cooper for a few years but now she's working she's looking for her first car.

She's set a budget of £4,000 for the car and can stomach £2,000 for insurance for the year.

Let's see your ideas folks...

My son managed an R56 Mini Cooper on that budget.

We run a standard Mini Cooper 1.6, 2007. Great car but I think she's looking for something different.

I don't think she's after the obvious alternative, the Fiat 500

My youngest is rocking a 2006 Honda Civic 1.8 - the insurance is less than his older brother's Swift 1.0 Hybrid. The swift is a cat S so cost £5k for a two owner, 60k, FSH, immaculate wee thing. The Civic was £1400 plus £400 on tyres, one owner, FSH...
One of them wanted a Saab or Volvo but we could not find a decent one under £2k. The Swifty wanted something cool and schporty, and has that really.

So the world is your oyster - she needs to tell you what she considers cool and you check the insurance....but finding a good one is the real challenge...

Is she driving in cities or longer trips?

My daughter bought a Smart Coupe when she passed her test, it’s a fantastic little car and she loves it.

Insurance was £600 for the first year and now in year 3 is £332!

Thank you so far - mostly local, with the occasional motorway drive (100 miles)

C1/107/Aygo (same basic car) are always great as a first car. Cheap to buy and run, and have a timing chain.

I've just picked up a 2012 107 as a local runabout paid £1500 for one on 65k miles.

First car and insurance policy - although she's been driving as a named driver for a couple of years.

Or too much on the insurance?

15E This vehicle's insurance group is in the lowest 25% compared to vehicles of similar age and body type.

My son bought a 2014 MK1 Aygo Black (with working a/c) back in March 2020. He's still got it. He paid £3100 for it with 53k on.

In that time it's had 2 x batteries, an exhaust bracket, a hazard light switch, and indicator stalk and a headlamp bulb. These are all common issues. I changed the front pads and discs back in Jan 2021, and have done the oil and filters every year. Everything is cheap to buy and it is so easy to work on. Last year he had 4 x Goodyear All season tyres fitted for £220.

It is slow, but Group 1 insurance, 56mpg on the motorway, and next year £20 a year VED.

How about a Clio?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202511017... something like this

My kids had one between them, admittedly the generation before this, turned out to be the. At I owned for the second longest period of time. Loads of them around, and plenty of bits on eBay to keep them going plus a good ncap rating

Thats the beauty of them. When they do go wrong its cheap and simple.

My daughter had an Aygo (before we bought our 107) and one of the electric windows stopped working. There are no complicated electronics, its a switch and a motor. I got two switches on Ebay for £10, and the switch just pops out of the door. Easier than changing a wiper blade.

I love them as a no nonsense cheap runabout.

My Daughter who’ll be 20 on Christmas Eve, exclusively uses our 2012 Alfa Mito 1.3 JTDM Sprint that’s been in the family for nearly 11 years. Alfa’s are often owned (like ours) by enthusiasts who have the cars diligently serviced annually and insist on matching premium tyres.

I would seek a well maintained Mito out and apparently they are quite cool in the world of young people.

The beauty of the Smart is it’s actually very strong with its ‘Tridion’ cage but the body panels bolt on and are easy to replace.

My daughter managed to reverse into a slip damaging the rear 3/4 and light.

In most cars that would be a really expensive body shop repair, but with the Smart I was able to buy replacement parts in the correct colour from eBay for under £100 and fit them in a couple of hours.
