Campaign for paid leave for IVF treatment
Discussion
On the BBC today
Should people get this for what is an emotionally horrific, and what can be a long and painful and often futile and heartbreaking journey
Or is it a life choice to pursue and should be done on annual leave allowance and special dispensation without pay.
Difficult one but not sure how I would feel if a small business owner or if if it's something the tax burden should pick up with the advance of workers rights to the detriment of the economy, hammering many of us with envy/hard work taxes yet downright refusal to tackle completely unsustainable monsters like the welfare bill and it's exponential growth and NHS reform amongst others.

I m against paid leave for people having IVF simply because they ve made a lifestyle choice to have children later in life.
Just like NHS funding guidance, there would need to be a limit on paid leave, such as only available up to age 35.
To blanket judge everyone as having "made a choice" to have children later in life is abhorrentJust like NHS funding guidance, there would need to be a limit on paid leave, such as only available up to age 35.

I went through IVF. It would never have occurred to us to want paid leave.

People have IVF because they're unable to conceive naturally otherwise. If you knew anything about the process, you would never describe it as a 'lifestyle choice', which is remarkably crass.I wouldn't wish IVF on anyone, but I'm very grateful for my son, who wouldn't have been born without it.
Yes, people should get paid leave, and they should also be educated about what IVF is, and how it works.
My wife and I tried IVF (privately funded) around 15 years ago (unsuccessfully). It was fairly traumatic and I had pretty much wiped it from my memory until I read this thread. We wouldn't have even thought about paid leave to go through the process, we (my wife really) just got on with it.

Expecting other people to fund you is abhorrent. If you can't afford IVF or unpaid leave how the hell are you going to afford to raise children properly.
Friends of ours went down the IVF route, very hard on them emotionally and financially but they wouldn't have changed it.
He sold his car and they did without some luxuries to afford it, much the same sacrifices as those of us who did not require IVF make once children arrive.

I also don't think IVF should be paid for by the NHS.
Ditto on both counts.I also don't think IVF should be paid for by the NHS.

As you may know or not, IVF is hard work. Apart from the egg harvesting there is the ad nauseum (literally) injections which have to be administered like clock work to accelerate or decelerate fertility.
It is emotionally draining and hard on the woman.
But the idea that this should be ameliorated by time off is utterly fatuous. Why? The timings for injections are largely late evening and the next day apart from fatigue there is no impact?
The proposal makes no sense whatsoever.
