What brands allow car warranty to be transf. to new owner

Are car brands compelled by law to provide with the remainder of the warranty when a car is sold to subsequent owners?
Or is it at the discretion of the manufacturer?

Someone might correct me but I'm not aware of any car brand where the manufacturer warranty doesn't transfer to a new owner. Whether that is the law I don't know, but I'm pretty confident they all do it.

Extended warranties can sometimes be a different matter

I don't think I've ever heard of a warranty not being transferred.

It's usually a key selling point of newish used cars - "Balance of manufacturer warranty" etc.

With Land Rover, the warranty needs to have been paid up in full before it can be transferred. i.e., if the previous owner was paying monthly, you cannot step in to his shoes unless the balance has been cleared....

it is the norm that the original warranty transfers to the new owner

extensions of the original warranty also transfer if they are fully paid for


however don't expect to claim if the cars been modified or repaired (they wont replace a blown engine that’s been chipped, they wont repaint a rusty panel that’s been repaired outside of their network etc.)

With Porsche, the warranty is on the car not the owner - always helps with selling them, as you can sell it with the same warranty you'd get from a dealer

If a brand new car then the warranty is “ automatically “ transferred to the new owner.
Perhaps for a very esoteric manufacturer it may be slightly different.
If an extended purchased warranty then assuming paid up to date again it can then be usually transferred.

The VW hybrid battery warranty is limited to the original purchaser of the car

I believe this restriction was introduced recently. It's certainly against the norm of what I'd expect.
