In New York City, Zohran Mamdani has won the mayoral race, becoming the first Muslim mayor and youngest person in over a century to lead the finance capital of the US. He'll take office on New Year’s Day
Is this the start of the democrats taking back some control?

I hope so, I hope this closet communist takes over the entire narrative of the DNC party and his face is on the front page of the Guardian and NYT for the next decade.

I saw some random street interview of a guy who said he was probably going to vote cuomo, was a bit undecided, and then decided to vote for mamdani when he saw that Elon was against him!

How many votes for mamdani were protest votes against the establishment?

This is going to go as well as you can imagine.

But that's how democracy works. NYC has a vastly changed demographic fabric than it did only 20 years ago.

People vote for what they think serves them best. The useful idiots who think this will turn into the multifaith LGBTQIA+++ rainbow of socialist utopia will then emigrate somewhere else and do the same. But given the margin, it looks like they weren't even needed.

This is a forever change.

Don't know anything about him but if Trump hates him he can't be that bad.

He said in his speech that: 'violence was an artificial construction'. What did he actually mean by that?

Looks like he's followed trumps playbook. A fight against the establishment and 'the man', higher taxes to support their policies, both big believers in the power of the government, populist language etc.

I've noticed that various news sources, including the BBC, have been keen to highlight that he is the first muslim mayor of New York. Why is this important? Will his religion have a big impact on the decisions he makes while in the job?

You should have seen the disinformation campaign against him. Him being a muslim and communist is all they could talk about.

He seems a nice chap who genuinely wants to do his best for people - I think it's a good result.

I can't help but wonder how long it will be before regrettably the light starts to fade from behind his eyes.

What I was saying. Let's see how that pans out. I'd be out like a shot if I lived outside the very best areas of NYC.

Many right-wing extremists went out of their way to post openly racist memes, tropes, and accusations — from antisemitic attacks after he said during a TV debate that he’d “do what’s best for New York” instead of pledging his first visit to Israel (as the other candidates did), to absurd claims that he celebrated 9/11 or was somehow responsible for it.

I’m sure the current wave of extreme political movements is watching all this very closely.

Given I said "If I were", it should be pretty clear.

I thought the guy came across really well and his policies are probably considered centrist by uk standards, so he would have got my vote.

Cuomo on the other hand came across as a Trump lite, as he hasn’t committed quite as much fraud and sexual assault.
