My wife is a couple of years away from retiring and we’ve been thinking about relocating from North Herts to a village or small town in Lincolnshire. I appreciate it’s a large county so we’re thinking of somewhere between Woodall Spa and Stamford. Recommendation's for nice places to live in and around the area would be really helpful please.

Thats a very large area with hundreds of villages.
Woodhall Spa is pretty nice. Cheaper than Stamford.
Stixwold, Baumber, Horncastle all pretty nice.
Quarrington near Sleaford and Rauceby, Silk Willoughby.
Ropsley, Irnham, Folkingham stand out.
All very Cotswoldsy.
Once you are into Stamford, although you are in Lincolnshire prices can increase to Rutland Levels.
Nothing wrong with Rutland either.
Woodhall Spa is interesting because it has restaurants, bars, golf courses, hotels and a good Cinema (Kinema) as well as boutique shops and a good Deli and forest walks.
It also has big events like car shows - well, you are asking on Pistonheads after all.

Nothing massive to add, although I have a good pal who lives in Stamford & loves it. Off there in a couple of weeks for a walk, pub crawl & dinner!

Just a little add on fact as I understand -

The Jurassic Limestone that features in Lincolnshire and the Cotswolds is the same belt formed during the Middle Jurassic period.

We were virtually on the equator when that sea was active.

It's worth a Google if you are interested.

Cotswold stone houses at Lincolnshire prices and minimal tourists.

I would check out health care quality and provision if that might be a requirement at some level - don't ask me why I am saying this but you get the drift.
We left Lincolnshire because of this. Fortuitously it was a second property and we moved back to our first.

Thanks - yes it’s a big area for sure.
Stamford and Rutland are lovely, we’d would possibly like to stay within 2 hours of where we are now, so areas close to Boston, Spalding, Sutton St James etc.

Rutland is nice, am sure any where in Lincolnshire is nicer. It's a trek however to get to any major employment area but if your are retired than that doesn't matter.

Compared to Rutland some parts of Lincolnshire is an absolutely pain to access specialist healthcare and there really is only one choice for provider.......

I'm Stamford, its getting busier, lots of houses and very little infrastructure to support it. Trying getting a doctors appointment, closest hospital is Peterborough, we do have a trainstation and get 1 train per hour.

You might find it cheaper towards market deeping.

I couldn't live in Boston or Spaliding.

Any questions ask

Thanks - yes health care will be an important consideration.

Boston has everything you need apart from peace and quiet.

As others have posted, the area around Woodhall Spa, Baumber, Stixwold and Horncastle is very pleasant.

Avoid anywhere on the coast, nothing wrong with the seaside towns just that they're either rammed with tourists or deserted.

I quite like Louth. Big bonus it's just down the road from Cadwell Park.

Woodhall is pretty nice as mentioned. I’d avoid Boston and surrounding areas.

I moved to Louth a few years ago, which is OK but possibly too far North for you.

I do find the Wolds far more interesting landscape wise than other areas of the county though.

I live in Gedney Hill, near Sutton St James. I was drawn back to the area having been born in Holbeach after many years in South East Essex. I have to say that healthcare is pretty good, I am regularly at Peterborough hospital, and was referred quickly after a prostate concern. Good luck with finding a dentist however. We are registered with a GP practice in Crowland which has been fine.
We looked at Boston but it seems to have a rather depressed air. If you want to talk about any other specifics in these areas, happy to help.

One point I would add, wherever you end up in Lincolnshire, check the proposed pylon route and also if there are any solar farms planned, there are several huge ones in the offing.

Moved from St Albans to Louth about 11 years ago and was like travelling back in time. I would recommend it however as close to Cadwell, lots of good restaurants, close to coast etc. It’s probably a bit far north from what you have said. Takes about 2hr 45 to St Albans.

Woodall Spa is nice, very good golf course if you play.

As others have said, I wouldn’t choose to live in Boston. Stamford/Grantham that bit further south with better transport connections.

Or there are better road and rail links if you are close to Lincoln and Lincoln quite a nice city.

As I’m sure you have seen, can get a lot more house for your money up here compared to Herts so more money for cars smile

Or head a bit further North - Newark and surrounds can be nice, though check the floodplain..
