When I was at school, we occasionally had a PE session where we did something called the beep test.

I recall us running between the walls of the gym with time between the beeps narrowing.

It was always a harrowing experience, but I'd like to know the following:

Can you still buy the tapes as I'd like to get hold of a copy?

What was the distance that was run?

Are there any records on how many "laps" people can do?

your describing the bane of my life.
the MultiStage Fitness Test(MSFT)/Vo2 max/bleep test.

two lines 20 meters apart. get from one to the other in time with the beeps.

in my 'job' we have to do one test a year. an 18-25 yr old male has to get to lvl 9, and 10 shuttles. 25-30 yr old's have to get to 8, and 10 shuttles.

i have seen people continue running past 16-5, but by lvl 10 i'm usually in a heap on the floor

if you google for MSFT or v02 max test, you can get the soundfile

I did the "Beep Test" many times when I joined the Army
It is not only a controlled fitness excercise and an event that adds that 'competitive' element, but it is also a good 'control' test to be carried out at various stages of training to measure improvements in performance of the people undergoing the training!
I thought it was horrendous the first time I did it, but soon realised it was 'easy as pie' once they introduced us to the "Log Race" (on the old Tank Proving grounds).
NOW THAT WAS HARD WORK!!!!!

I would have thought of you popped into a TA centre or know anyone who is in either the Forces or the Police (I think they use it too) They would probably be able to get you a copy of the tape!?

The 'Beep Test' was developed at Loughborough University. The first person to complete it was one of their students a certain Mr Neil Back!!

Back was said to be the fittest person that the England fitness coach had EVER come across. He once (allegedly) got to level 17, had a 5min breather, then did it to level 17 again. Phenomenal guy.

I thought Rory Underwood had completed it, too?
