Green plates not on EV

Was behind this 2010 Toyota iQ yesterday in Swansea. Why is it interesting, well the number plate. Only zero-emission vehicles are allowed to have green border on the number plates, i.e., EV or Hydrogen powered. Anyone have an idea if this is a real conversion or more likely someone is chancing the plate? A MOT check on DVLA web site shows the plate is the correct number for a blue iQ, but says it is petrol as would be expected.

My guess is they bought the plate on black market without showing the V5.

Anyone else seen inncorect plates on petrol powered car?

Seen a few on non EV cars. I just assume they are simple of thinking anti EV people that think it’s funny

The plate will just have been made outside the UK. There's no requirement to show V5 to have a plate made that way.

There are Irish companies that make completely legit plates this way, and post them to the UK.

I saw one of these green EV plates on a brand new 1 series.

I did a double take when I saw it and even did a quick google to see if there was an electric 1 series now available.

As far as I am aware the green stripe doesn’t afford you any benefit so I can’t think what they would gain by “chancing it”?

Quite. There seems little point in them beyond virtue signalling anyway.

No, and I did think there was no restriction on which cars can use them.

I.e. they are a gimmick to raise awareness of EVs, but nothing stopping you putting them on a 5 litre Mustang or whatever. I’ve seen one or two similar cars do that.

So yes I’ve seen it, and a quick google suggests I was wrong and that the plate supplier should check that BEV is listed on the V5. Every day’s a school day.

I wonder if the dealer genuinely thinks any kind of electrification qualify for green plates.

Funny thing is, our place, if you don't specify green plates when pushing the pdi request through, it's a lottery if green plates will be issued or not, frustrating that we have to specify it as the model is on the job request.

We have an electric Mini the first thing we did was remove the green plate.

No I won't - it seems as tossy as those who use black and silver plates on 80s cars (usually Fords)

Probably charging bays, the amount of brain-dead EV drivers who seem to think these are parking bays and not charging bays appears to be growing daily

Re getting plates made I've had several motorbike and car plates made and delivered in legal size with what appear to be the correct BS numbers on the back with no document checks.

At least 2 of these (motorbike ones) have passed MOT'S at fussy MOT places, all of them were orders through amazon IIRC.

If it was more of a vanity plate then the user may have just been recycling the plate from a toaster (lecky car)
