Hi guys!

I'm new to the forum. I found you because I have a car buying dilemma...

I'm still torn between the McLaren 750S Spider (I drove it at the dealership). The excitement was incredible, a great car. I like the overall design, but on the downside, it's very similar in appearance to the 720S (which has been in production for a few years now). On the plus side, the doors open upwards (impressive). The engine sound is sufficient.

In a few days, I'll be able to drive a Ferrari 296GTS. I also like the design (not as much as the McLaren's exterior), but the interior is nicer. There are more configuration options.

Many people rave about the Ferrari's driving experience, citing the available torque from the start.

Has anyone driven both cars for a longer period?

A new McLaren in Europe (my configuration) cost €340,000 (excluding taxes). Very nice exterior color, the right amount of carbon fiber, etc.

There aren't many offers on the used market. You might find something around €280,000-300,000, but the configuration (exterior/interior color) isn't quite right for me.

Ferraris, on the other hand, can be bought used for €270,000-280,000, maximally one year old with minimal mileage (up to 1,000-2,000 km), with configurations around €360,000-365,000. So the reduction is significant.

The Ferrari has already seen its biggest depreciation, and ordering a McLaren is still to come.

If you had to choose, which car would you choose?
I also considered a Ferrari SF90, but obviously, I'd rather spend less on a car, and this one would only be for weekend driving (fun). Furthermore, it sounds worse and is probably less "crazy" because of the four-wheel drive. My daily driver is a new Panamera modified for almost 700 hp with a full Supersprint exhaust, so I have a good four-wheel drive car there.

What I can add is that the McLaren was comfortable for me (both the suspension and the seats).
The Ferrari models I found are fully equipped for this price (including comfortable, ventilated seats, a full carbon fiber interior and exterior, etc.).

The choice is easy for tall drivers - they don’t fit in the Ferrari. There’s much more room all around in the McLaren. Otherwise whichever one you fancy more.

I have however heard that there are a few improvements in the 296 GTS over the GTB.

As I'm used to older cars, I find McLaren's approach to steering much more to my liking than the quick/light steering in many modern sports cars, so that's where I'd go, but I think that's very personal.

The carbon tub of the McLaren is more of a rigidity advantage in spider form, but I'm sure the Ferrari is 'good enough'.

In the UK at least, 296 GTBs have depreciated to the point they now start well below the cheapest F8 Tributo. This is attributed variously to concerns about the hybrid battery over time, or just that people prefer eight cylinders to six. One can take a view whether this means the 296 is now good value and will hold firm, or a harbinger of steeper depreciation in future.

A new McLaren 750S will certainly depreciate as you say, likely following the 720S.

It's a cheaper, slower car but it might be worth trying an Artura Spider too if you can; it could give the instant hybrid torque of the 296 combined with the hydraulically assisted steering of the 750S. It also comes with an LSD, again like the Ferrari but unlike the 750. But it may be 'not enough' for you if you're looking at the more senior supercars.
