Electric vehicle drivers to pay congestion charge in central London

Owners of electric cars will be charged £13.50 a day from 2 January, while those driving electric vans and lorries will pay £9.
Drivers of electric vehicles (EVs) will have to pay congestion charges in central London early next year - a move described by the AA as a "backward" step.
From 2 January, the owners of electric cars will be charged £13.50 a day, while electric van and lorry drivers will pay £9.
These are reductions of 25% and 50% respectively on the £18 which other motorists will have to pay from that date, a £3 increase on the current fee of £15.
At the moment, pure battery-powered EVs are eligible for a 100% discount on the congestion charge, which was first introduced in 2003.
The charges are paid to drive into central London between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, and between noon and 6pm on weekends and bank holidays.
Mayor Sadiq Khan has insisted it is essential the scheme "stays fit for purpose", claiming the capital faces an increase of 2,200 extra vehicles in the zone on an average weekday next year.
The EV discount will be cut further from 4 March 2030, to 12.5% for cars and 25% for vans and lorries.
But Ginny Buckley, chief executive of EV advice website Electrifying.com, said: "It's far too soon for TfL (Transport for London) to remove exemptions for electric vehicles from the London congestion charge."
Edmund King, the AA president, has urged Sir Sadiq to reconsider.
He said: "This is a backward step which sadly will backfire on air quality in London.
"Many drivers are not quite ready to make the switch to electric vehicles, so incentives are still needed to help them over the line.
"This policy sends a confusing signal. You can't champion clean air while penalising the vehicles that deliver it."
EVs will account for nearly a fifth of all vehicles in the congestion charging zone by the end of this year, according to Transport for London (TfL).

The congestion charge was brought in to raise revenue, but I assume the excuse given was to reduce 'congestion', hence the name?Either way, it was inevitable. Every which way the motorist can be charged/fined will be utilised.

You are being gaslit my friend, in the cause of squeezing more money out of you.Nox levels in central London had dropped dramatically before the charge was ever introduced. You are breathing more NOX in living in your own home than you would be by the roadside in London.
If you work from home and want to reduce your NOX intake, set your chair up by the roadside in London and you will lower your intake. Same for particulates, if you cook at home your particulate intake will be higher than outside, especially if you have gas or wood burning heating as well.

Correct. EVs are automatically exempt from ULEZ charges and currently exempt from Congestion charges if you apoly and pay a £10 annual admin fee. So from next year EVs will have to pay a congestion charge, but not ULEZ charges. Seems fair enough now there are many more EVs trundling around Central London. I have a few customers left in the cc zone and I have had my Nissan env200 for ten years . First parking in the Westminster area was free then it was a small charge first ten minutes
that’s gone . Free road tax gone and now £ 9.00 per visit as well as all the changes to the road set up one ways all over the show no left or right turns roads blocked off so you can’t drive down and cameras and enforcement everywhere .
Mr khan it’s working that’s me done I won’t be driving into the zone , not worth the hassle .The ultimate losers are my few elderly remaining customers who have used me for the last 30 odd yers I have already been refusing new work in the zone even though some have offered lots of extra money for me to go as most trades just won’t go .

Why ?The change is about congestion, not just emissions. Even though EVs are cleaner, they still take up road space.
The previous green discount helped encourage cleaner vehicles, but now with EV uptake much higher, the discount is being phased out to keep the congestion charge effective.

If you’re being offered loads of extra money then what’s the issue. Cc change and parking are more, I get it, but if you’re being paid more it’ll even out. that s gone .
