Fair play to the service or ex servicemen who surfaced this

Why would you do this? I mean one thing maybe embellishing your exploits in the army (all the ex services people I know are quite coy about it and not having ever done it I am never comfortable asking about Iraq or Afghanistan etc).

But claiming to be a rear admiral how many can there be in the navy for a start.

Stolen Valour is taken very seriously by the armed forces.

Could be “considered” a criminal offence.

I’m assuming this man is shaking in his boots.

But needless to say this’ll probably get more time than organised criminal gangs dumping rubbish.

As a current member of the armed forces (28 years so far) I find this repugnant behaviour. Impersonating a member of the armed forces especially on Remembrance Sunday as this low life has done really gets my goat.

I’ve worked hard, seen and done things I don’t talk about to earn my medals. To stand there wearing those medals dishonouring those that have earn’t them is a disgrace.

He’s probably lucky he’s an older gentleman otherwise someone might have given him some corrective action.

I remember doing the Lincoln remembrance parade about 10 years ago when some oik decided he was going to walk straight through the marching troops as he didn’t want to wait 1 minute for us to pass. Caused bloody mayhem for the parade.

We learnt later that a couple of veterans in the crowd had got hold of him as he tried to walk off and readjusted his attitude (face) for him.

That's up there with the protestors sitting in front of the military band a few years ago. Showing contempt for the very people who grant you the freedom to be a tt is vile

Very weird behaviour, he's probably a lonely sad old man, but to be fair he did look very smart.

Clap him in irons for a few weeks, keel haul him. then make him walk the plank.

Very odd behaviour

Not saying he shouldn’t be arrested, but interested to know what the crime would be?

There is a Uniform Act that prohibits unlawful use of military uniform. The punishment however doesn't seem terribly severe and tbh faking a DSO I'd say really should cop something a bit more severe.....

In America, for sure. Luckily we don’t take such arrant guff quite so seriously in the UK.

He’s been named and shamed. Whatever reputation he has/had is rightly in tatters. His local community will let him know what they think about him. He’s gained no personal prestige from this sad event. Quite the reverse.

Let the police, courts and prison service get on with something else.

I used to work with a guy, ex Coldstream. But he had a way of talking up his achievements and exploits whilst serving. And a significant dose of BS in there too.

I saw some of his comments on Facebook and other soldiers were REALLY unhappy with him. Properly threatening him and pointing out his nonsense!

There is actually a Facebook group that calls out these walts. I'm glad they do.

I'm intrigued to know what he has been arrested for. I can't imagine wearing a military uniform is an offence, or the sealed knot society would be all in Dartmoor Prison by now. As would the WW2 re-enactment guys wandering around in camo painted jeeps and fatigues.

What the guy has done is reprehensible, but I'm not sure that I want wearing fancy dress to be something that sees people in court

One assumes he’s a bit mentally ill and he didn’t hurt anyone.

I’d suggest people need to lighten up a bit.

I’m more offended by the dramatisation of historical events that aren’t accurate, because they could be dishonouring many people in front of even wider audiences, for money.

But carry on.

I really don't understand. If you're going to do it then don't pretend to be a rear admiral with what I believe is a DSO? I'm not a spotter but there's tens of thousands of people out there that would spot that in a second.

I don't think we take it that seriously. Pity and annoyance is more the feeling. If he'd have dressed up as anything other than a very senior officer he probably wouldn't have been arrested.

In addition to a crap joke, I can also contribute an irrelevant anecdote. Well, a contrasting anecdote.

My godfather "D" died recently. At his memorial service it was mentioned that he enjoyed his time doing National Service in the Royal Navy. My mother struck up a conversation with another guest, mentioned D's national service, and the guest volunteered that he too had served in the Navy. Some time later the guest's wife joined the conversation and, completely in contrast to her husband, pompously dropped into the conversation that he'd retired as an Admiral.
