I haven't played rugby for 7 years, but due to recent events (which some may remember) I have decided that it is time to get fit again.:D

That said, I started training this week with a local rugby team, and the coach says he is impressed with my handling and control (though my fitness is sadly lacking! However the rugby league allow rolling subs, so we can get away with that.)

It is therefore with great pleasure that I announce my comeback game tomorrow, a couple of weeks before I was planning. I can't wait to put that first big hit in, and to make that first bone cruncher:bounce:

[small]PS I have a feeling that I may be in some discomfort tomorrow evening, so any advice on soothing aches and pains is greatly appreciated. Cosmoschick, if you're out there, behave yourself lol

I still have the x-rays of my back somewhere if you want to be put off...

Have fun though and remember that if you go into the tackle thinking you might get hurt you will!

Not far off, I've been the heavy roller for the cricket team all summer (doubling up as a sightscreen during the game lol)

15 pints of beer will at least postpone the pain until Sunday morning.

Don't worry, Pies. A few weeks of unbelievable pain and you'll be fit again.

How have you been anyway?

At the risk of stating the beedin' obvious, I'd suggest copious amounts of alcohol until the aches subside. Given that this is your first game in a while, you could be in for a hell of a week

Not too bad mate thanks-I've followed up on a promise that I made myself (and have lost a stone and a half as well )

I've found out who my friends are now (and made a good new one along the way through PH) and I am doing a lot better across the board. I am still going to try to steer clear of the beer a little bit for now, so any other painkilling techniques would be appreciated

Playing for the A team at Shaw Cross Sharks, either at prop or second row and can't wait to "Monster" somebody (used to be renowned for my "assistance" in tackles)

No not mad mate, welcome back to the wonderful world of waking up on a sunday morning with a hangover and a back thats as strong as a ribbon of snot.

As fo rthe aches and pains, drink before you go to bed ( water ! ) and in the morning don't dive out of bed as you will be tight than a six year old, get out slowly and have a warm bath and stretch. Nothing is going to stop it, you are going to ache like a bitch oin the morning. I am now 7 games in, never stop training during the summer ( contact and all ) and I am went training last night did scrumging and have a stiff back today.

Thats why you play, you know you love it, and as for the tackles mate, just make sure your the one going forward, even if it is only a little step ( get off the line quick and it hurts a lot less ).

Good luck and try not to break anything

p.s. rolling subs in league is for poofs, come and play union, it a gentlemans game don't you know ?

No it ing isn't mate. I played some "egg chasing" when I lived in Bedford (went to uni with Budge Pountenay (sp?)) and wasn't keen on people stamping on me and raking me with their studs. I've always preferred running straight into the tackle and hitting as hard as possible (and with around 20 stone behind me I am hoping to bounce a few people off)

What is it they say?

Football is a gentlemans game played by thugs, while rugby is a thugs game played by gentlemen.

Yeah but in union when someone like you or me has just creamed a centre, they have chance for revenge by shoeing seven shades of shite of of you, its a level playing field out there.

Seriously though I do play a bit of league ( helps with defensive line and tackling, but very much enjoy playing the 15 man game, horses for courses I say, as long as the ball isn't round I will support it.

A lot of it's down to where you're born and bred as well. I am M62 corridor born and bred, with a family history (Grandad played for Leeds, Uncle for Hunslet and my cousin has been a bit of a journeyman) so i have been brought up to follow "proper" rugby rather than "kick and clap". My attitude changed after playing it though, and I do enjoy both now-although I think we need to see more decent forward play in union (used to love watching Leicester use the rolling maul), and scrums that have a point in league (I saw someone called for feeding not long ago-nearly died laughing!!)

Er, be careful. An unfit friend of mine was seriously injured when he returned to rugby after a long period.

Well, if you are turning your nose up at the beer solution, then I would suggest a proper warm up, a proper warm down with plenty of stretching.

NB. Obviously, this course of action *may* result in some bruising for your ego.

A bath will also help, along with gentle excercise on Sunday.
