Airfields - Informal "track time"

Can anyone recommend any airfields (or organisers of airfield days) where it's possible just to have a mess around finding and crossing limits and so on, and where you don't have to stick to a "circuit" as such?

Speak to Andy @ 1stLotus.com, they will accomodate any marquee of car, he was offering open sessions @ North Weald Airfield off junc 7 of the M11 for £75, but that may have been on condition that you had done the basic course with him (was is good) for £150.

I just took a load of S2000 novices on an Academy day with www.motorsport-events.co.uk/trackdayintro.htm - no more this year but give them a call for next year. You're not left to it as such, but they structure sessions wit 4 or 5 cars doing exercises which are designed to show drivers the limits they can go to.

Cost was £79 - it was at RAF Heyford. Included big lift-off oversteer moments, drifting, slaloms etc. with a 2 hour track session at the end.

Everyone enjoyed themselves, learned loads and were encouraged to explore their own and the cars' limits.

I've been to Crail. Although it is very cheap, the surface is crap compared to a track, or the road come to that. There isn't much run off on many corners, just lots of tyres to crash into. Or huge hay bails. You get what you pay for.

You're right about the surface, but when I was there for a performance driving course, most of the corners had runoffs that ended up in potato field, so fairly painless

Bruntinthorpe airfield in leicestershire, loads of run off, very wide track, open all year round.....

Bruntingthorpe is great loads of room a long track with a 2.5 mile straight.

Great for top speed and acceleration runs

Also there is loads of run off round the track and it is so wide you have achance to correct things.

Bruntingthorpe, was surrounded by old trailers last time i asked, can you confirm they are gone now
