Step son is looking for suggestions on a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet device. It’ll mainly be for schoolwork and streaming. He also mentioned that he needs to use MS word, excel etc, but wants something that allows proper installation rather than the subscription-style setup you get with a Chromebook.

We have looked at Lenovo Idea models, but the forum reports on them didn’t inspire much confidence.

Does anyone have recommendations for something more reliable?

Not sure if it's a current model, but I bought an Asus Zenbook Flip 14 OLED about 2 years ago.

I am not a heavy user of it - but it's brilliant.

Acer Spin. We have 2. Although they seem to have increased in price somewhat since we bought them.

I don't trust Asus anymore after their refusal to fix the ZenFone 8 m/b issue. And I've have a couple of issues with their BR1400 convertible, fixed under warranty.

Check out what he might get as a student discount, MS will offer software practically free and hardware vendors will also be looking to get young customers.

I don't know if he wants a 2-in-1 device like a Surface but you'll likely find this could end up as a massive compromise. Also if he games or will game in the future, this could lead to him needing a 2nd device.

fwiw I have a Surface Pro which is great but I don't use it as a touch device. For that, I have an iPad.

Start at the school or LEA because there should be some offers for students in school and also uni.

Microsoft surface pro or Samsung 360 any good? You don't give a price range, but from experience these two are great 2 in 1 devices.

For office you can still get a permanent licence and it’s around now that you need to do so. Between Black Friday and the Xmas sales you’ll find it as much as 75% off. Obviously with a subscription you get updates, but in 99.999% of home use cases that doesn’t really matter.
