So Mrs B's old mgf is at end of life. 150k it's seen better days. Actually good milage for one of these. Sadly few garages done her over including the respray. Rust is pretty bad in it now and the last MOT ran into pages.

Here's the old. Who knew a wheel barrow would be a perfect fit in the passenger side. Obviously she was less than impressed when I sent her this pic.


So wanted another In green and good condition to see her though lots of years. Timing couldn't be worse with a kitchen arriving next week and work to do but this popped up. 11k miles and single owner until April this year. Most of its milage done earlier on and it's been serviced every year. Some oil changes after a few hundred miles been kept garaged and it's like brand new. Paperwork from new including from the original dealership for the original order plus extras like hardtop and boot rack. £21k if anyone is interested plus extra later one.



Look at her face. It's not changed since yesterday ( wheelbarrow won't be anywhere near this one)





And with the old. We've had to keep the old as there are some parts she wants off it. The old roof pretty new and has a heated glass screen where as the new has a a great condition roof with a plastic so these will be swapped. There are a few other bits she wants off the old which we'll do in the spring.

Ignore the state of the place it's on the to-do list of next year.

I've always wanted to have a good drive of one of these. Not own but a good drive.

I always enjoyed these in period and think they still look great now. I wasn't so keen on working on them though, and they were quite needy!

That ones looks like an absolutely fantastic find, just looked at the MOT history and it's quite literally flawless since 2006. Amazing.

FWIW, and I might be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here, with cars that have barely been used for years it's very common for hoses to explode and things to give out the first time you stretch their legs. I'd be very tempted to give it a full cooling system overhaul (hoses, stat, pump and a damned good look at the rad) before using it in anger.

ETA and the timing belt. 100,000,000% I'd do a timing belt, it's probably the original one and will have more crack going on than Glasgow.

how are these for reliability? I'd quite like one but I'm hopeless with the tools and don't want it spending it's life in my local garage. Love them in this green colour, very cool.

It's flawless mot's since new we have all the paperwork. It was serviced then MOT''d at the same garage since new. The owner of the garage bought it for his collection after nagging every year but hes retiring and downsizing which is how we got it.

Noting the MOT the milage discrepancy is annoying but we have the paperwork which shows an extra 7 added by accident. May be way to late but will try and get it corrected.

Pipes look okay but will keep an eye. Coolant bottle is still clear white and the coolant a bright pink. Re the belt it's on list. Mrs b is going to get the head gasket upgraded as she did her last and will do the belts and pump whilst in there.

Hers was reliable until the end. ECU caused an issue but rust was the biggest problem. The engine is mid mounted and a pain to work on with lack of access. I've not done any major work though.

My old man worked for Rover/MG when these were new. Always had a soft spot for them, especially the VVC which sounded amazing to a young boy at the time. Most of my time sat in one was just the boggo 1.8 though.

Now an older boy, I don't fit in them anymore after trying when my mate had one years ago.

I had a brand new one in 1996, my first new car, P220VGN, a bog standard 1.8 with the only extra being Tahiti Blue paint, I also didn't tick the box that everyone else did of PAS, as to my mind its mid-engine and has no weight over the front wheels! I had it on a factory order with an 8 month lead time.

I only had it 6 months due to splitting up with my partner and having to buy her out of our house we owned.
I had another one about 8 years later, in Nightfire Red, only kept that for a couple of months as I was then offered a new job but required 3 x 200 miles round trips per week on the motorway and thought an MGF was completely the wrong car for it.

I did enjoy them both and would definitely love to have another although the majority I have seen for sale have been MGTFs...
This one does look immaculate and glad its being used!
Never had a go in a VVC....

Are there suppliers for the hydrolastic spheres now? The rubber must have gone rock hard on all the original ones and any "new" old stock.

I felt like i was sitting on one rather than in one, which spoilt the whole experience for me,

that and when turning in, i couldn't tell if i was understeering or just didnt have enough lock on (though that might have been that particular car)

Still nice to see a fun car on the road

but £21k !!!!

According to the bank of England inflation calculator, £21K in 1996 is £42,554.46 in todays money.

And we think cars are expensive now!

I've got a soft spot for these, had a lot of fun in a 1.8 non-VVC one briefly (the clutch went through the footwell and I couldn't be bothered to put money into it to fix it). The suspension was half empty so it was lower than normal and felt like I was driving an Elise. biggrin Corners and roundabouts were amazing. Gripped well and very little bodyroll (due to the hydragas being half gone). biggrin
