Pulled over - Dangerous Driving

Driving down the motorway one evening last week, I noticed I was being closely followed by a police car.
My speedo was showing 75ish so I just carried on, knowing that gps would have been more like 70.
After a mile or two I got stopped. Officer accused me of 80mph which I obviously denied.
He said that it should be a £300 fine and 3 points for dangerous driving, however he couldn’t be bothered to issue a ticket.
Were the two officers just bored, on their way home? Are police now stopping people for being marginally over the limit on the motorway? Anyone else had this happen?

or you were speeding and you would have got a ticket for speeding not dangerous driving
or is there more to this story

First dangerous driving isnt points, its a mandatory disqualification. Even if it was careless, it would be £100 fine and three points unless it went to court and it could be more of a fine as its income based at court.

or you were speeding and you would have got a ticket for speeding not dangerous driving
or is there more to this story

2. The story has been changed beyond recognition of the truth.

There is no fixed penalty for dangerous driving. A fixed penalty for careless driving is £100 with 3 penalty points. My speedo was showing 75ish so I just carried on, knowing that gps would have been more like 70.

This is 100% true. I didn’t bother with badge number etc, as I didn’t receive a ticket/ fine etc.
I wanted to ask opinion, as I have passed loads of police cars on the motorway, seems strange that this one wasted its time stopping me.
As some of you said, perhaps just mistaken identity, they took a punt and used speed as the excuse.

I’ve been stopped for speeding on the A66 for overtaking a police car that was doing 70. I apologised and he let me off - didn’t think anything of it. Maybe your speedo is more accurate than you think or there’s is less accurate. Doesn’t sound like a big deal tbh. I think your irrelevant mentioning of dangerous driving has caused confusion.

Ah so it does happen to others, makes me feel somewhat better.To be clear, the police said dangerous driving, I’m only quoting them.

Ah so it does happen to others, makes me feel somewhat better.To be clear, the police said dangerous driving, I m only quoting them.

What speed did you say you were doing?He may have just been annoyed that you "disrepected" him by continuing to drive in front of his fully markerd up car in excess of the speed limit. Apart from one, a Sargeant on a bike, all the cops that stopped me when I was younger were complete a
holes. Been stopped twice when older, both times driving a Merc and dressed in a suit. Police attitude was completely different - once I argualbly did do something dangerous, he turned around and chased after me, I tried to hide, which must have been obvious, but he still let me off.
I had a bizarre incident the other day driving through a town. Was in stop start traffic and a marked Police car coming the other way drove past me and then put his blues on and started doing a three point turn. Thinking they'd just been called on an emergency or something when he got behind me I pulled over to the left to let them past, except they didn't go past, they just hung behind me and then turned the blues off. I pulled back out and carried on, and he just sat behind me for about a mile, eventually taking a different roundabout exit to me. No idea what it was about, since I know for a fact all my docs are up together, etc.
I have been TPAC'd on the Motorway once, was driving a hire car at the time. Saw a traffic car behind me then a few seconds later two more appeared, then the PULL OVER sign went on and I was chaperoned over to the hard shoulder. Turned out the car had been hired by some undesirables before me and they had just done a burglary on an ATM so the reg was on their list. Took a few seconds for the officers to realise I wasn't a 6ft tall bodybuilder or with accomplices so was sorted very quickly.
The funny thing was that the hire car was provided for me by G4S who I worked for and I was in Derby to cover for the regular CIT drivers who had been injured in previous robberies!
